School to Work

English 12 School to Work Mrs. Vera

Course Overview This course is designed to prepare you for life after high school – especially for those who will seek employment right after graduation. It will focus on skills necessary to get and hold a job. In addition to these skills, you will continue to develop your reading skills with novels and other types of reading assignments. You will also be required to participate in a senior project designed to give you experience with job interviews.

The majority of instruction will come from the text School to Work. We will pick up where you left off in this book during your junior year.

You will be reading at least one novel this year as well. This will be done to further your reading and vocabulary skills. It’s important that these skills be maintained while you focus on employment skills.

Grading Grades are based on a point system with longer, more work-intense assignments being worth more points. You will receive grades for homework, class activities, tests, and projects. Tests and projects will be worth higher point values.

All assignments are expected to be completed by the due date given. No time extensions will be given. No extra credit assignments will be offered. Grading for my classes is fair and somewhat lenient unless you do not complete the work. Students caught cheating (whether giving or receiving answers) will receive a zero on that assignment or test.

Exceptions for time extensions will be work that is required for graduation projects. Those assignments MUST be completed, even if no grade is earned for English class.

Classroom Behavior Students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior at all times. This includes following the classroom rules:

 Come to class prepared.  Treat all others with respect.  Follow all directions the first time they are given.  Follow all school rules.

Students who do not maintain appropriate behavior will receive discipline that ranges anywhere from a verbal warning to a behavior referral – depending on the severity and frequency of the behavior.

Technology Use  All effort will be made to make better use of technology this year. You will be required to learn and use this technology.  The main site that you will use will be our class wiki page. Please refer to it often. The web address is: www.cffquakers.wikispaces.com/Mrs.+Vera . Homework, class documents, instructions, due dates, and links to others useful sites and information will be found there. Make a habit of checking it daily.  This year, I am providing students with my email address. Please use it to ask questions and submit work after school hours. That address is: [email protected] . Please make this address available to your parents so that they can contact me too. This email is set up to my cell phone, so I will be notified if you email me in the evening, and I will respond to you if at all possible. Please use this address for school-related questions/information only.
