Recommended Reading for Semester 1 2009/2010 Modules

Please refer to the ‘Course Structure’ supplied within this pack to identify the modules that are available on your programmes of study.

Please also note that students will receive the most up to date reading lists at the beginning of the each semester, but below are some recommended texts for a number of modules.

Books:

There are many general textbooks in Production and Operations Management. They all contain chapters on the topics covered in the module- forecasting, inventory control, planning and control, MRP etc. Many introductory textbooks in Management Science/Operational Research also contain chapters on these topics.

The following book is the main module text. Students will benefit highly from having access to a copy (studying just from the handouts is not sufficient).

 Steven Nahmias: Production and Operations Analysis, 2009, 6th edition, ISBN 978-007-126370-2, Publisher: McGraw-Hill

In addition, a selection of chapters from the following books will be used. (The relevant sections from these books will be made available during the lectures.)

 Thomas E. Vollmann, William L. Berry, D. Clay Whybark, F. Robert Jacobs: Manufacturing Planning and Control for Supply Chain Management, 2005, 5th edition, ISBN 007-112133- 1, Publisher: McGraw-Hill  Richard B. Chase, F. Robert Jacobs, Nicholas J. Supplementary reading

Textbooks Textbooks on ‘organisations’ vary widely. Therefore, it may be useful to explore several. They often have a dominant academic or managerial focus; are usually either prescriptive or critical; can be primarily focused on North American workplaces and research; are often rooted in the social science disciplines of psychology or sociology; and differ in their degree of engagement with readers. We favour no particular text, but expect you not to accept any single text as given. As you will appreciate, this is an intellectually challenging module that requires you to demonstrate the ability to analyse, synthesise and offer critique: for example, get into the habit of asking yourself political questions such as ‘in whose interests’? Below is a list of ‘typical’ texts for this subject:

Hatch, M.J. (1997) Organization theory, Oxford: OUP.

Morgan, G. (1986) Images of organization. London: Sage.

Mullins, L. J. (2005) Management and organisational behaviour, 7th edition. Harlow: FT Prentice Hall.

Scott, R. (1992) Organizations: rational, open, and natural systems, 3rd edition. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall.

Thompson, P. and McHugh, D. (2002) Work organisations: a critical introduction. London: Palgrave.

Weick, K.E. (1979) The social psychology of organizing, 2nd edition. Reading, Mass: Addison-Wesley.

The students will receive the most up to date reading lists at the beginning of the autumn semester in Sept.
