Carolina Forest Elementary School Homework Policy – Grade 3
Introduction
Homework at Carolina Forest Elementary is an essential part of the academic program. Assignments will vary in accordance to student needs and will relate to the classroom instruction. Homework assignments are intended to reinforce and extend learning initiated in the classroom and serve as a tool for teachers to assess student understanding of classroom instruction. Completion of routine homework can motivate students to develop good work habits, study skills, and will increase personal initiative and responsibility. Homework can also stimulate creativity, critical thinking and lead to the awareness that learning can take place outside of the classroom. The guidelines below indicate how we can assist students in completing homework and help them gain the most from their learning.
Homework Policy Guidelines for Students Always do your best work. Write directions for homework in the student planner. Understand assignments clearly before leaving class. Ask questions about your homework if you do not understand. Bring home the proper materials to complete the assignments. Turn in completed assignments on time. Budget time properly for long-term assignments. The calendar in your planner can help you project planning. Complete any missed work due to absence from class. Homework must be completed within 3 days of the absence. Understand how homework will affect your class grade. Homework counts as 10% of your average. Talk to your parents and teacher if you are having difficulty with homework. All students will have Reading, Word Study, and Math homework, Monday-Thursday. This does not include studying for upcoming assessments.
Homework Policy Guidelines for Parents Be familiar with the philosophy and guidelines of the homework policy. Check your child’s agenda or website nightly for assignments. Establish a daily routine that includes a time and place to do homework assignments with limited interruptions. Actively supervise homework completion, assisting, but not doing the work. Contact the teacher with questions or concerns especially if your child exceeds the allotted time frame.
Homework Policy Guidelines for Teachers
Assign homework on a regular basis in keeping with homework policy. Assignments may be on a daily basis or of a long-term nature, such as reports or projects. Ensure that all students fully understand all homework assignments before leaving school. Ask questions about homework or complete a problem to ensure student understanding before they go home. Require that each student use the school provided planner. Assignments should be discussed, checked and when appropriate, corrected and returned to students. Teachers have the responsibility to communicate with parents of students who are falling behind in completing homework assignments. Students will not be assigned homework on Fridays, during the weekends, or during school vacations. Long term projects, leisurely reading, studying for tests, and work missed during an absence from school are the only exceptions.
