INTO THE WILD: Final Project To reflect on your reading experience with Into the Wild, you will complete a final project. Please read the directions carefully so you can work to receive maximum credit. This is a group project (at most 4 individuals/group) and each individual is required to speak their fair share of the presentation, using notecards, which means—each group member must present their part of the project equally as to the rest of the group. Each presentation must last no less than 10 minutes and no more than 12 minutes. While we will spend some time in class working on this project, do NOT count on class time alone to complete it! Use the following timeline to plan your work: Class time: Wednesday and Friday—December 10 and 12 Final project due: Tuesday, December 16 Presentations: Tuesday, December 16 and your respective final exam date

Objective: To create a multi-media presentation that reflects and analyzes the novel Into the Wild, focusing on characters, relationships, events and/or locations AND their connections to several other genres. As you reflect, think about the development of the plot, the main character, and the moods and feelings that you experienced at different points in the book. Directions: . Decide on a theme from Into the Wild that you and your group will support and analyze. . Choose three (3) genres: a song, a poem, and a tv show/movie clip that relate to your theme. . Include the poem, lyrics for the song, and a tv show/movie clip in your presentation. . Choose a specific character, event, or location from ITW that adequately connects with each genre. . To illustrate these story elements, add a short excerpt from the novel in your presentation. Your analyses MUST include the following: o Thorough explanation of each genre, referring to literary elements, symbolism, diction, ethos, pathos, logos, imagery and/or figurative language, and how it reflects your theme. o Explanation of how each genre supports/relates/ties in with a specific character, event, or location. o A detailed analysis of each of the connections. o Proper parenthetical references for novel excerpts. For example: (11; ch.2). For more information on the true story: 1. The original Outside magazine article: http://outside.away.com/outside/features/1993/1993_into_the_wild_1.html 2. TV Show/Movie Clip:

What if Sean Penn hadn’t asked Eddie Vedder to write and compose the soundtrack for the film version Into the Wild (see sample below)? What other artists, songs and sounds could he have selected to create a fitting backdrop for Chris McCandless’ adventure?

“ Society” by Jerry Hannan, performed by Eddie Vedder for the Into the Wild soundtrack
