Course Description Sports Medicine is the third course in the Therapeutic Services/Sports Medicine Career Pathway. The course is appropriate for students who wish to pursue a career in healthcare with a focus on the musculoskeletal system, injury assessment, injury prevention, or rehabilitation including careers in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Services. This course will enable students to receive initial exposure to therapeutic services skills and attitudes applicable to the healthcare industry. The concepts of anatomy and physiology, assessment, preventative and rehabilitative care are introduced. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated, including medical terminology, kinesiology, patient assessment, record keeping, and basic life support. The prerequisites for this course are Introduction to Healthcare and Essentials of Healthcare. Mastery of these standards through project-based learning, technical-skills practice, and leadership-development activities of the career and technical student organization, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), will provide students with a competitive edge for entry into either the healthcare global marketplace or a post- secondary institution to pursue further education and training. COURSE STANDARDS HS-SM-1 Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.
HS-SM-2 Analyze anatomic positions, directional terms, movements, and postures as related to the appendicular skeleton.
HS-SM-3 Utilize correct terminology, abbreviations, symbols and practices to appropriately communicate oral and written information within the physical medicine setting.
HS-SM-4 Demonstrate injury classifications and evaluations
HS-SM-5 Analyze and describe the basic principles and concepts of healing.
HS-SM-6 Demonstrate the steps of Basic Life Support (BLS) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Assess and manage patients with bleeding, bony injuries, soft tissue as well as musculoskeletal injuries.
HS-SM-7 Identify and describe pathogens commonly encountered in physical medicine and demonstrate appropriate infection control principles
HS-SM-8 Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, Range of Motion (ROM), Manual Muscle Tests (MMT) and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the upper extremity. HS-SM-9 Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, Range of Motion (ROM), Manual Muscle Tests (MMT) and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the lower extremity
HS-SM-10 Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, and describe the mechanisms signs and symptoms and potential complications associated with head and facial injuries.
HS-SM-11 Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, ROM, MMT and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the spine.
HS-SM-12 Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, ROM, and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the thoracic and abdominal regions.
HS-SM-13 Evaluate the importance of nutrition in physical medicine.
HS-SM-14 Demonstrate the process for basic assessment (i.e. vital signs, height, weight, etc.), monitoring, and reporting/recording patient/client’s health status.
HS-SM-15 Analyze and describe the basic principles and concepts of rehabilitation.
HS-SM-16 Analyze and describe the principles of pharmacology.
HS-SM-17 Analyze and describe the appropriate use of therapeutic modalities.
Grading Grades will be updated online weekly. Students will also have a weekly grade template in their student folder in which they will self-monitor their progress. More information about Infinite Campus (Bibb County’s grading portal) and how students/parents can create accounts can be found at: https://campus.bibb.k12.ga.us/campus/portal/bibb.jsp. The following are the county-determined grade weights for this class.

Homework Homework will be given when needed. Homework will NOT be computer-based, however, if students are behind or have missed assignments that they need to complete, they will be responsible for completing this work at home.
Attendance Policy Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. 10 unexcused absences will result in a student not getting credit for the course. After the 3rd unexcused absence, the parent will be contacted and student will be referred to the counselor. Tardies will result in disciplinary actions. This course’s attendance policy is closely aligned to the attendance policy is stated in the code of conduct.
Make Up Work Any missed assignments need to be completed within 5 days after the assignment is given or within 5 days after a student returns from being absent. It is the responsibility of the student and parent to insure that all make-up work is turned in within the specified time range.
Classroom Rules 1. Refrain from eating and drinking in class 2. Use technology appropriately 3. Keep a clean area and push in your chairs before leaving 4. Stay seated unless you have permission 5. Use the bathroom before and after class, no one will be allowed out of class for bathroom use (unless medically documented with the nurse) 6. Raise your hand to speak, unless asked an open question 7. Remain in seats. Gain permission before getting out of your seat

PBIS Rewards System High-Fives will also be given out throughout the year for exhibiting PRIDE in the classroom or around the campus. o High fives can be used for certain PBIS school wide events . Other incentives will be announced to the class when applicable.

Professionalism Requirement
Two opportunities exist for students to earn these grades. One is to join Health Occupational Student Organization (HOSA) and participate in the required activities or reading four healthcare related articles over the course year, write an APA style report for each article, and present them to the class. Articles must be approved by Teacher.
HOSA is a co-curricular student organization, which means that HOSA is integrated into the class. All students will receive a grade for HOSA participation (Professionalism). Students who meet the requirement by joining HOSA spend time outside of class being active members. The same is expected from each student completing this industry certified Healthcare program, therefore, students not interesting in joining HOSA will be able to compensate for this time by completing the healthcare related book reports. All students will complete the in- class assignments. The requirements for those who join HOSA and whom decides to complete the book reports are listed below:

Reading Requirements Must read 4 Healthcare articles. All the articles are to be pre-approved.
