Guidelines for Pacing, Progress Monitoring, and Benchmark (Summative)Assessment in System 44

SBCUSD Elementary Guidelines for Pacing, Progress Monitoring, and Benchmark Assessment in System 44 All references come directly from the System 44 Screening, Assessment, and Reporting Guide (SARG).

Pacing in System 44 is individualized, and thus no pacing guide can be created. Students enter System 44 at one of two start points, Series 1 or Series 4. A student moves on to the next series after mastering the content. A student may master the content after only one complete pass through the activities in a single instructional strand, or a student may require multiple “cycles” through the activities to achieve mastery. The program allows for up to six cycles through the material, and then will move the student on to the next topic regardless of mastery. Therefore, although a group of students may all begin the program at the same time, even if attendance is consistent, they will progress at widely variant rates. In Series 4 and beyond, students are given quick assessments prior to beginning each topic. If a student passes the Fast- Track assessment, s/he is able to skip that section or topic of instruction. Fast-Tracking also will result in variant completion rates. Progress-monitoring data is collected within software activities, as well as at the end of each Topic. As students move through the instruction, the software collects data on mastery of the scope and sequence in relation to time spent on the software and monitors how well students maintain skills. Data from the System 44 software is used to monitor class, group, sub-group, and individual progress and to:  Group and regroup students for differentiated instruction.  Provide performance data for grading needs.  Share meaningful progress information with student, parents, and administrators. The System 44 materials include two summative assessments. According to the System 44 Screening, Assessment, and Reporting Guide (SARG): “System 44 Summative Assessments can be administered at two points in the curriculum: midyear (or after completing Lesson 54 in the Teaching Guide or Series 13 in the software) and at the end of the year (or after Lesson 84 in the Teaching Guide or completion of Series 24-25 in the software).” In SBCUSD, we recommend administration of the summative assessments after completion of Series 13 and Series 24-25 in the software. If a teacher is considering moving a student to the regular READ 180 program prior to completion of Series 24-25, the final summative assessment should be given to assess whether the student has mastered the System 44 content.

SBCUSD Progress Monitoring Data and Summative Assessments required for Alternative Core and Intervention students:  System 44 Student Mastery Report run every 6 weeks  System 44 (midyear) Summative Assessment after a student completes Series 13 on the computer  System 44 (end of year) Summative Assessment after a student completes Series 24-25 on the computer  System 44 (end of year) Summative Assessment to ANY student moving out of System 44 to READ 180 only (to assess mastery) To pass a Summative Assessment, students should meet the following criteria:  Score at least 85% in each section of the test (Phonemic Awareness and Phonics, Word Recognition and Spelling, and Vocabulary and Morphology)  Score at least 80% on the total test Full instructions for downloading, administering, scoring and interpreting the Summative Assessments can be found in the SARG at pages 54 – 57.
