A message from Mel, KO6BJ, Rancho RACES CRO

Plans are underway for a West End Emergency Communications Expo to be held at the Rialto Fire station near the Rialto airport. Many of the City RACES, County ECS, Search and Rescue, Satern and others will participate. The purpose is to show the public what Amateur Radio can do and is doing in our local area. Newspaper and television will be present and, oh yes, food will be provided for the participants. The City of Rancho will be holding the annual CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) drill on May 8th. Rancho ACS will be part of the drill. We will need radio operators for the field as well as in the Fire DOC.

From Jack Peterson, K6DMM:

The ARRL field day has been set this year for 23 and 24 June. That’s the weekend hams set out to demonstrate their abilities for emergency communications – that is, without the use of commercial power, with jury-rigged antennas, etc. Contesters compete to get as many contacts as they can during field day weekend – the 24 hours between Saturday 11am and Sunday 11am. Others just set up their equipment and make contacts just to show how it is done. This year for the field day weekend, the West End Auxiliary Communications Council (WEACC) consisting of Rancho ACS and other RACES and emergency communications groups in the West Valley area are sponsoring the West Valley Emergency Communications EXPO, which will be held at the Rialto airport, Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 June. We will be inviting the public to see what emergency communications is all about, and the many ways ham radio plays a part in local emergency response situations. San Bernardino County ECS is joining with the WEACC to sponsor this event, and will have their communications van, CS 502A there to demonstrate its capabilities. In addition, we hope to have the Red Cross emergency response vehicle (ERV), the Stater Bros. Emergency communications semi-trailer, a West Valley Search and Rescue unit, a Salvation Army canteen (which will serve food for radio operators and other participants), a boy scout troop camping out overnight and doing some cooking for participants, possibly fire equipment on display, and lots of hams showing the public all the various operating modes involved in modern amateur radio. All ACS and RACES members are urged to attend and bring along other hams as well as your family. It’s our “Field Day 2001.”
