Imagery Words that create a mental picture by appealing to the five senses - what you see, smell, taste, hear, and feel Metaphor Comparing 2 or more things not using like or as Simile Comparing 2 or more things using like or as Personification Giving an animal or object human-like characteristics Hyperbole A huge exaggeration Oxymoron Putting two opposites together Alliteration The repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of a group of consecutive or closely connected words Onomatopoeia A word that imitates the sound it is describing Allusion A reference to someone or something famous Irony When the outcome is different than what is expected. It is often humorous. Stanza Words grouped in a poem; like a paragraph Couplet A two line stanza; usually rhymes Rhyme Scheme The pattern of rhyming Meter Using a certain amount of syllables in a line Repetition Repeating words or phrases for a stronger effect. Free Verse Poetry that does not follow rules of meter or rhyme.
