<p> Figurative Language</p><p>Imagery  Words that create a mental picture by appealing to the five senses - what you see, smell, taste, hear, and feel Metaphor  Comparing 2 or more things not using like or as Simile  Comparing 2 or more things using like or as Personification  Giving an animal or object human-like characteristics Hyperbole  A huge exaggeration Oxymoron  Putting two opposites together Alliteration  The repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of a group of consecutive or closely connected words Onomatopoeia  A word that imitates the sound it is describing Allusion  A reference to someone or something famous Irony  When the outcome is different than what is expected. It is often humorous. Stanza  Words grouped in a poem; like a paragraph Couplet  A two line stanza; usually rhymes Rhyme Scheme  The pattern of rhyming Meter  Using a certain amount of syllables in a line Repetition  Repeating words or phrases for a stronger effect. Free Verse  Poetry that does not follow rules of meter or rhyme. Sonnet  14 Lines; 10 Syllables in Each Line; often a love poem Lyric  A poem written to express an emotion Humorous  Poetry written to make people laugh Ode  A poem written to something or someone of extreme importance Catalog  A poem that is essentially a list</p>
