M. MACEO NANCE, JR., PRESIDENT 12 EMERITUS OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY ON 13 THE OCCASION OF HIS SEVENTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY ON 14 MARCH 28, 2000, AND TO RECOGNIZE WITH GRATITUDE 15 HIS INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIGHER 16 EDUCATION AND TO THE DIGNITY OF THE CITIZENS OF 17 ORANGEBURG COUNTY, THIS STATE, AND THIS NATION. 18 19 Whereas, Dr. M. Maceo Nance, Jr., was born in Columbia, South 20 Carolina, and celebrates his seventy-fifth birthday on March 28; 21 and 22 23 Whereas, he obtained his early education in Columbia’s public 24 elementary and secondary schools, received a Bachelor of Arts 25 degree in 1949 from South Carolina State University, and received 26 his Masters of Science degree from New York University in 1953; 27 and 28 29 Whereas, from 1943 to 1946, he served his country with 30 distinction as a member of the United States Navy; and 31 32 Whereas, Dr. Nance began his illustrious career at South Carolina 33 State University in July, 1949, and through hard work, superior 34 knowledge, and stellar performance, rose meteorically through the 35 college’s ranks from ROTC Supply Clerk to Director of the 36 Student Center, to Assistant Business Manager, to Business 37 Manager, to Vice-President for Business and Finance, to Acting 38 President of the College, and to President of the College; and 39 40 Whereas, from June 23, 1968, the date he assumed the position as 41 President of South Carolina State University, until his retirement 42 from the presidency in 1986, he made innumerable contributions

1 [4811] 1 1 not only to South Carolina State University, but to the Orangeburg 2 community, the State of South Carolina, and our nation; and 3 4 Whereas, these contributions include: the development and 5 operation of a highly regarded academic institution of higher 6 learning designed to meet the needs of the state’s 7 African-American citizens and a rural extension program focused 8 on aiding the state’s small farmers; participation in the planning 9 and fruition of Hillcrest Golf Course, a unique local, state, and 10 federal effort to bring public golf to the state’s citizens; and 11 commitment to the establishment of harmonious and productive 12 relationships among the college and its consumers and the 13 community of Orangeburg and the State of South Carolina; and 14 15 Whereas, these contributions have brought Dr. Nance many 16 accolades, honors, and awards which include having bestowed 17 upon him the title of President Emeritus of South Carolina State 18 University, and being named the recipient of the following 19 honorary degrees: Doctor of Laws - Morris Brown College at 20 Atlanta University - 1968; Doctor of Humane Letters - Francis 21 Marion College - 1975; Doctor of Laws - University of South 22 Carolina - 1976; Doctor of Humane Letters - The Citadel - 1983; 23 Doctor of Humane Letters - Clemson University - 1983; Doctor of 24 Humane Letters - Medical University of South Carolina - 1986; 25 and Doctor of Humane Letters - South Carolina State University - 26 1988; and 27 28 Whereas, it is fitting that the General Assembly pause to honor Dr. 29 Nance on the occasion of his birthday and thank him for his 30 invaluable contributions. Now, therefore, 31 32 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 33 concurring: 34 35 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 36 resolution, honor Dr. M. Maceo Nance, Jr., President Emeritus of 37 South Carolina State University on the occasion of his 38 seventy-fifth birthday on March 28, 2000, and recognize with 39 gratitude his invaluable contributions to higher education and to 40 the dignity of the citizens of Orangeburg County, this State, and 41 this nation. 42
