Project Title: “Cherry Picking Guide” for Small Molecule Screening Team Members: Blake Hondl, Amit Mehta, Ryan Pope, Jon Millin Client: Noel R. Peters Advisor: Willis Tompkins Date: 1/20/04 – 1/27/04

Problem Statement:

Develop a device to increase the efficiency of and reduce error in the transfer of small volumes of compounds between 384 well micro-titer plates.

Restatement of Team Goals:

1. Research current devices and the Memowell 384 well plate used in the laboratory design ideas 2. Research potential design ideas 3. Develop a more precise problem statement 4. Develop a list of Product Design Specifications (PDS)

Summary of Team Accomplishments:

1. Client meeting – developed an understanding of the design problem 2. Began establishing details of currently available devices suited to our design problem 3. Researched design ideas and the possible use of an LCD screen

Summary of Individual Accomplishments:

Blake Hondl (Team Leader)

1. Researched current 384 well plates 2. Wrote progress report

Ryan Pope (Communicator)

1. Researched LCD screens 2. Established further communication with client

Jon Millin (BWIG)

1. Conducted research into types of LCD screens and possible applications to the project 2. Tested LCD screen functions using a personal laptop Amit Mehta (BSAC)

1. Conducted further research into 384 well plates 2. Attended BSAC meeting to establish a link between the team and the course designers 3. Developed a detailed description of the design problem

Statement of Team Goals:

1. Continue research into relevant background information a. Patent search b. Research various existing well plate illuminators 2. Begin developing product design specification (PDS) 3. Research design possibilities a. LCD screens b. Diode arrays c. Java-Microsoft Excel Combatibility

Project Schedule:

1/23 – 2/13 Research and brainstorm ideas, develop PDS 2/13 – 3/5 Prepare mid-semester presentation 3/5 Mid-semester presentations 3/6 – 4/16 Choose one final design idea, develop a prototype based on that design, continue developing PDS 4/16 – 4/30 Prepare final presentation and paper; finish prototype 4/30 Final poster presentations 4/30 – 5/7 Final written report and final meeting with advisor
