Course Overview and Content: This is an elective, one-semester course in Sociology for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The purpose of this class is to enable students to achieve a better understanding of the individual as a part of a group setting. The class will emphasize the individual's relationship to his culture and cross-cultural comparisons. The course will include contemporary social problems. This course counts towards KSDE graduation requirements. 1/2 credit.

Textbook: Sociology: A Study of Human Relationships, by W. LaVerne Thomas. There will be additional student readings supplied over the course of the semester.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes – by the end of the semester, you should be able to:

 Understand the scientific study of human behavior that is sociology.  Identify and describe the various Theories and Theorists of sociology.  Understand the role of Culture in society.  Understand the role of Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination in human relationships.  Define Social Stratification and explain why it is such a powerful variable in human experience.  Understand the role of Socialization in the development of self.  Understand Crime and Deviance and their impact on groups and individuals.  Understand Collective Behavior and its impact on social change.  Identify social Institutions and their impact on the individual and groups.

Required Coursework:

The following are approximations of assignment values: Current Social Issues (30%) Quizzes & Homework (30 %) Tests/Projects (40%). Homework needs to be on time or will therefore be counted at 50%. Half-credit assignments will be accepted through each quarter. Copying of other students work will result in a zero on the assignment. Social Current Issues will be weekly and due on Fridays. There will be a comprehensive Final Exam at the end of the semester.

Grading Scale – the Olathe grading scale will be followed: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: <60%
