<p> Sociology: Syllabus Mr. Keach Room 318 mrkeach.weebly.com</p><p>Course Overview and Content: This is an elective, one-semester course in Sociology for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The purpose of this class is to enable students to achieve a better understanding of the individual as a part of a group setting. The class will emphasize the individual's relationship to his culture and cross-cultural comparisons. The course will include contemporary social problems. This course counts towards KSDE graduation requirements. 1/2 credit. </p><p>Textbook: Sociology: A Study of Human Relationships, by W. LaVerne Thomas. There will be additional student readings supplied over the course of the semester.</p><p>Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes – by the end of the semester, you should be able to:</p><p> Understand the scientific study of human behavior that is sociology.  Identify and describe the various Theories and Theorists of sociology.  Understand the role of Culture in society.  Understand the role of Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination in human relationships.  Define Social Stratification and explain why it is such a powerful variable in human experience.  Understand the role of Socialization in the development of self.  Understand Crime and Deviance and their impact on groups and individuals.  Understand Collective Behavior and its impact on social change.  Identify social Institutions and their impact on the individual and groups.</p><p>Required Coursework:</p><p>The following are approximations of assignment values: Current Social Issues (30%) Quizzes & Homework (30 %) Tests/Projects (40%). Homework needs to be on time or will therefore be counted at 50%. Half-credit assignments will be accepted through each quarter. Copying of other students work will result in a zero on the assignment. Social Current Issues will be weekly and due on Fridays. There will be a comprehensive Final Exam at the end of the semester.</p><p>Grading Scale – the Olathe grading scale will be followed: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: <60%</p><p>Grade Updates: Students and Parents can check on progress in class using ParentVUE and StudentVUE allows you to see things as they are in my grade book, including future assignments that might be posted at that time. </p><p>Specific Classroom Rules and Expectations:</p><p>Passes, tardies, late work, attendance and missed work – Please refer to Olathe East policies noted in student planners.</p>
