Information for Artists & Organizations Participating in the 2016 Artists Open Studio Tour

Exhibition Dates

The Pacific Grove Art Center Exhibition runs September 2 through October 27, and will show the works of artists who are participating in the Tour September 24 & 25. Participating organizations are invited to submit a sign for their organization that includes their logo and other pertinent information. The sign must follow the Criteria for Exhibition Artwork, below, with the exception that it doesn’t have to be an original work of art.

The Hartnell College Gallery Exhibition runs August 29 through October 14, and will show the works of artists who are participating in the Tour on October 1 & 2.

Artists who are participating both weekends are encouraged to submit their work for both exhibitions. Organizations that are participating both weekends are encouraged to submit signs for both exhibitions.

Criteria for Exhibition Artwork

Artists are required to submit information about their exhibition artwork to Shirmaine Jones, at [email protected], no later than August 15. The information is to include: artist’s name, title, medium and price.

Artwork submitted for exhibition must be original, framed, suitable for hanging, with wires attached, or be ready for installation on a pedestal. If wire edges are sharp, please twist and duct tape over. Gallery wrap is fine. Removable labels must be on the front of each piece stating artist’s name, title, price, medium, and size of piece. Hand written post-it notes are fine. In addition, you can have this information on the back of the piece.

Hartnell Gallery has no size limit. Pacific Grove Art Center’s maximum size for framed pieces is 30" x 30"; sculpture needs to fit on a pedestal or be a reasonable size if it is a floor piece.

Delivery date to the Pacific Grove Art Center is Saturday, August 27, between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. Delivery date to Hartnell College Gallery is Saturday, August 20, between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Failure to meet the delivery date may lead to forfeiture of your gallery space. The final decisions on all installations will be made by the preparators.

Artwork pick-up from the Pacific Grove Art Center is on Friday, October 28, between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. Artwork pick-up from Hartnell College Gallery is on Saturday, October 15, between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m.

No early or late pick-ups will be allowed. Note: A storage fee will be charged for any work remaining at the galleries after the closing of the show. The charge will be at least $25 per day. Pacific Grove Art Center and Hartnell College are not responsible for work left after pick-up date.

All work displayed must remain in the exhibition through the closing date and time of show.

Wine Cellar Raffle

Arts Habitat will be conducting a raffle to give away two Wine Cellars, one each at the Pacific Grove Art Center and Hartnell College Gallery Galas. We’re asking that all artists sell tickets before the events. We’re also soliciting donations of bottles of wine from all participants. You can bring your donation of wine with you when you deliver your artwork for the exhibition. Raffle tickets will be distributed at that time along with the other printed collateral items. Our goal is to collect 100 bottles of wine, some of which will be poured at the events, and some of which will be given away in the Wine Cellars. The proceeds of the raffle will help to cover the expenses of the Artists Open Studio Tour.

Publicity and Collateral

Free Tour catalogs, with maps, can be found in the September 15 issue of the Monterey County Weekly. Digital maps are available at bit.ly/mcaost. Tour postcards, location signage, catalogs with maps, raffle tickets and visitor surveys will be distributed to artists during exhibition artwork delivery at Pacific Grove Art Center and Hartnell College Gallery. These items are scheduled to be ready beginning in early August. Please use the Artists Open Studio Tour logo in all marketing and publicity that you create and distribute. A digital version of the logo is attached with this message.

Tips for a Successful Tour

We have compiled a guide to make your Tour a success. I will send it to you in my next communication. I will also email a digital copy of the AOST catalog & map, so that you can proof your entry information. The design of the catalog cannot be changed at this point, but please let us know if you find any typographical mistakes or omissions. September 24 and 25 – Peninsula & Coastal Artists Open Studio Tour, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tour stops must stay open entire time.

September 30 – Hartnell College Gallery Tour Gala, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

October 1 and 2 – Salinas, Salinas Valley and North County Artists Open Studio Tour, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Studios must stay open this entire time.

October 7 – Pacific Grove Art Center First Friday reception, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

October 15 – Hartnell College Gallery artwork pickup, 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

October 20 – Wrap Up Thank You Event at Monterey Museum of Art, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
