The following information will help you support your child’s learning this half term (Autumn 2) in their class with Mrs Taylor.
Details of work covered this half term:
Literacy Letters: Children will write formal and informal letters linked to our WW2 topic.
Maths Data: Using and drawing line graphs and timetables Multiplication and division: Using formal and mental methods Perimeter and area: Revision on these skills Science Materials and how they change continued: Identifying the properties of different materials including density, magnetism and conduction. Evaluating the benefits of using different materials. Changes – investigating changeable and non- changeable reactions. Understanding the differences between solids, liquids and gases and how they can change. Topic The Blitz: How did world war 2 affect the lives of people in Britain with a History particular focus on children’s lives. R E What is the religious meaning of Christmas: Children will learn about the significance of Christmas to Christians and investigate how traditions and symbolism link to the birth of Jesus. Art The Blitz: Children will be using different materials to depict images from the Blitz. DT Cooking: Y5 will be working in small groups to learn to cook 4 simple recipes with staff from the school kitchen. Some children will do this project in Autumn term 2 Lanterns: Children will join and strengthen wood to make winter lanterns. Computing Audio: The children will be using audacity to create adverts and podcasts for a WW2 radio station PE Netball and basketball: Children will be working on skills and playing full games. Music Christmas songs: Y5 will be learning songs for a Christmas performance in Firth Hall at the University of Sheffield in partnership with the Music Hub. French Hobbies: Including musical instrument, films and sports Homework Spellings – New spellings on a Friday and the test will be the following Friday. Literacy Homework– To be returned by Thursday and new homework issued on Fridays. Maths Homework will be through the Abacus Activelearn website: https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/ - passwords will be provided. Reading books – To be returned every Thursday to be swapped. If children are still reading the same book then books may remain at home but reading passports need to be returned regularly.
