Winifred Jackson SP 2-12 CS 9049 CNDV 5380 I believe I would gain the most knowledge about the competencies CNDV 5322 Program Administration, Ethics and Law because it will provide me with an overview of the profession with emphasis on legal issues, ethical principles and professional standards of conduct for counseling. This course will help me understand the competencies from a legal, ethical and professional prospect; however, CNDV 5390 School Counseling Practicum would provide additional information about all the competencies. Course CNDV 5390 will provide me with field-based experience under the supervision of a school counselor to understand the competency first hand.

As a result of the Self Assessment of Competencies in School Counseling Rating Scale, I feel that there are several areas I need to improve my knowledge and need some additional training. I feel these two classes will help me to improve my knowledge in these areas. There are only four competencies I feel knowledgeable enough to use on job now. I learned that I would not feel comfortable with using counseling skills to work with individuals or small groups, yet.

Part II-Reflection

You will write a two-paragraph reflection. In the first paragraph you will describe what a school counselor does using the competencies as a guide. In the second paragraph, answer the question, "How are students different as a result of what school counselors do?"

A school counselor addresses the developmental needs of all students’ academic, personal, social and career development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and improves student success. Through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote equity and access to comprehensive learning experiences for all students. A school counselor supports a safe learning environment and work to preserve the human rights of all members of the school community and address the needs of all students through culturally relevant prevention and intervention programs that are a part of comprehensive school counseling program. The school counselor abides and understands the laws, and upholds ethical principles and professional standards. A school counselor creates a mission statement supporting the school’s mission and collaborates with all stakeholders to promote all students’ academic, career, personal and social development. A school counselor provides services to address the needs of the diverse community by developing a collaborative relationship to enhance the work with families and the community. A school counselor serves as the campus testing coordinator for state assessments, uses data to evaluate the needs of students, and administer and interpret assessments. A school counselor implements accountability strategies to increase student performance and contributes to closing the achievement gap. Finally, a school counselor studies, monitors, and applies techniques for individual, group and cross culture guidance programs to address the needs of all students.

Students are different as the results of school counselors because their attitude, knowledge and personal skills for helping them understand self and improving their academic performance is improved. School counselors can help students understand the importance of developing skills to become successful in school and the workforce. As a result of school counselors, students develop skills for how to handle conflict, develop relationship with family and social issues. Students understand the importance of developing skills for taking assessments to close the achievement gap. Students overall attitude and behavior increase with their school performance increasing in attendance, academics, interpersonal relationships, and social skills as a result of school counselors when they feel good about themselves.
