SENIOR NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2015

The annual College and Career fair will be Tuesday, October 13th from 6:00-8:00 in the McNeese Recreation Complex. There will be representatives from Sowela, McNeese, ULL, LSU, as well as other colleges and universities in Louisiana and Texas. There will also be representatives from local businesses, trade and industry, and the military. This is for all high school students. If you want to get information about any school in Louisiana, this is the time to get it.

Scholarship Information

Horatio Alger Louisiana Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Twenty-five $10,500 scholarships will be awarded. For more information and to apply, visit http://horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline is October 25, 2015.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program is available to students with 3.0 or higher GPA who want to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution. Application information at www.coca-colascholars.org/ . Deadline is October 31, 2015.

The Louisiana Loan Authority (LELA) is sponsoring an art contest with awards up to $3,000 for Louisiana seniors. For more information, go to go to www.askLela.org or pick up a flyer and application in the counseling office. The deadline is November 15, 2015.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is sponsoring an essay contest for high school seniors. First prize is a $5,000 scholarship. For more information, come by the counseling office. Deadline is October 23, 2015.

McNeese State University: If you are planning to attend McNeese, you need to apply for admission as soon as possible. There is no longer a separate application for scholarships. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis so apply soon. Priority deadline is December 1, 2015.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette: If you are planning to attend ULL, you need to apply for admission as soon as possible. Scholarships are awarded based upon the information submitted in your application for admission. Students must meet the criteria for scholarships by January 31, 2016.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) is the required application for most federal, state, and institutional student financial aid. Completing this single application gets you considered for the TOPS scholarship program, the Louisiana Go Grant, the federal Pell Grant, student work study programs, etc. The FAFSA is not available for completion until January 1, 2016. We will have a workshop here at the high school with representatives from McNeese again this year. The date will be announced later. Fall Preview Days/Scholarship Deadlines

McNeese State University: Fall preview day is November 7, 2015, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. You can tour the campus, meet faculty, pick up financial aid information, etc. You can register on-line at www.mcneese.edu.

Northwestern State University: Fall preview day is November 7, 2015. You can register online at www.nsula.edu.

University of Louisiana Lafayette—Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 campus tours are offered Monday-Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Friday at 9:00 a.m. only. For more information, go to www.louisiana.edu/admissions.

Sowela Technical Community College: Information about applying to Sowela can be found on their website www.sowela.edu/application-information. For general information concerning scholarships available at Sowela, come by the counseling office.

Other News

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) will be administered here December 9th in the library. The ASVAB is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. It is designed to measure an individual’s aptitude to be trained in certain jobs. Sign-up to take the test will be announced during October.

There are books to help you study for the ASVAB as well as the ACT, SAT, etc. at the Calcasieu Parish Public Library. All you need is a library card and the motivation to improve your scores. The Iowa Branch is open from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Mr. Cornell Thomas will be happy to help you find what you need.

ACCEPTANCE LETTERS: Please bring your acceptance letters from college, the military, etc. to the counseling office so we can make copies of them. We put a copy in your folder and on the college/career wall in the main hall. We would like a copy of all of your acceptance letters.
