Welcome to our Presentation Day for the 2013-14 season. As many of you already know this will be my last End of Season report as the President of the Monbulk Cricket Club. I am standing down for a number of reasons but mainly to allow me to focus on my role as President of the Recreation Reserve Committee which is working on our new Pavilion. We have recently been advised by the Shire of Yarra Ranges that funds have been set aside for construction in the 2016-17 financial year. This is very exciting news, not only for the MCC but also our township.

This year we may feel we underperformed on the field but the feeling among the group stayed positive all year and I think we have the nucleus of a very good group all looking to improve and go on to better things next year. Across all grades of senior and junior cricket we had 107 players have a game of cricket with us this year which was slightly up on last year. Our Milo In2Cricket Program remained strong with over 110 participants which is slightly down on previous years however this was due to the introduction of our Under 10 program this year. As a club we have continued a good tradition of hosting social events. We had our annual Shuffle Night, Trivia Night, Past Players Night, Corporate 20/20 day for SCA Hygiene and again supported the Monbulk Fun Run. This year our Ladies Day combined with the TV program “What’s Up Downunder” in promoting the McGrath Foundation. A big thank you to Kelly Utting and Aleisha McDonald for co-ordinating the day.

On the field we were competitive all year with the 2’s and 3’s still in the hunt for finals leading into the last couple of games finishing 7th and 6th respectively. The 4ths finished 8th this year which was impressive given the difficulty of fielding sides at various times during the year and other sides forfeiting when we had filled the side. A lot of credit must go to Warney and Fogs for their work in filling this side. A positive from this was being able to give the Under 15’s some senior experience and getting guys like John Myring and Bernie Badgery back playing cricket. Given our high hopes at the end of last season and leading into this season the 1’s losing the first 3 games by a total of about 13 runs was a disappointing start. We bounced back to win the next couple but then were unable to overcome some of the stronger sides in the mid to late part of the year. Going into the last round we were sitting on the bottom of the ladder and needed to win and rely on other losses to avoid relegation. We did our part with Aaron Powell playing probably his best game for the club making 74* and taking 4 wickets (2 less than he promised me on the Thursday night before the game, although he did deliver on the 50) We then had a nervous 20 minute wait in the rooms while we waited for Knoxfield to chase down Footballers 196 to ensure we avoided relegation. A big relief and a credit to the all the boys in how they went about their cricket in this game. If we take that into next year we will be very competitive. Stuart Alford continued his role as head coach, however his new business venture made it difficult to commit the time he had over previous seasons and I would like to thank Fogs and Blake for stepping up into running trainings this year. I would also like to thank all our captains this year. Shane Cosstick once again lead the 1sts capably and has all the players wanting to play for him. Matt Nott stepped up from the 4’s to take on the 2nd’s this year and did a great job. I think the boys had a bit of a shock when the upstairs meeting room was used prior to Round 1. I don’t think most of the blokes knew it even existed. Tim Fogarty once again took on the 3’s and does a great job of mixing experience with youth and making sure everyone gets a good go. Thanks also to Jeff Jarvis and the other blokes who stepped up to skipper the 4’s in what was a very inconsistent side.

In the juniors we were once again unable to field an U17’s side and this year the boys decided they would like to focus on playing seniors at Monbulk rather than attempting to merge with another side. From what I saw Josh Rak and Darcy Myring have both embraced senior cricket and I look forward to watching them rise through the grades in the years to come. The U15’s finished on top of the ladder and were narrowly defeated in the semi-final. I don’t get along to many junior games but did watch the boys in the semi and there are some very impressive cricketers amongst this team and I look forward to their continued involvement with the senior sides. The U13’s merged with Knoxfield after Round 1 and went on to make the grand final which was very impressive for a merged side. The U12’s continued their improvement and we look forward to these boys forming the base of a strong U13’s side next year. The association also introduced an U10 non-competitive grade this year and we had enough numbers to be able to field 2 sides most weeks. During the year the co-ordinators experimented with the rules and I believe they have come up with a concept which is a great transition from Milo In2Cricket to competitive junior cricket. To the senior boys, Brian Martin, Chris Defina, Tom Watson, Steve Utting and Duncan Maher, on behalf of the club, and I am sure the junior parents, I can not thank you enough for giving up your time to coach the kids. They are the lifeblood of our club and with yours and other senior players continued involvement we will hopefully be able to fill a full contingent of competitive junior sides I would like to thank all our team managers, Carolyn Gillard, Bronwyn Badgery, Kerrin Turney and everyone else involved in training and game days for the support they offer. I am sure all the kids also appreciate your efforts. Special thanks goes to Steve Utting in his role as Junior Co-ordinator. He brings his 28 consecutive MCC seasons experience and teaching skills to the role which seems to make everything run seamlessly. Steve Bohun continued with his co-ordination of our Milo In2Cricket program this season and it continues to be a highlight of our club and the envy of many others. He also gave up his time in running a number of clinics at the local schools in their Active After Schools Program. This not only gets local kids interested in cricket and advertises our club but Steve also kindly donated the income from these clinics back to the club. Thanks Steve. I have been assured he has one more left in him to run this program and will be looking for a replacement during next season. It is probably one of the most important roles in the club. Thank you also to all the other helpers that make our Milo Program run so well.

Once again, my job this year has been made much easier due to the support of our hard-working committee. To Steve & Funky, once again a special thank you for the mountain of work you do to make things run smoothly, most of it behind the scenes. To the rest of the boys, great job in taking hold of your portfolios and helping to spread the load. Also, many thanks to Jimmy Fraser for looking after the Saturday drinks and for your support, Jeff Jarvis and Lena for all of the work you do on the BBQ and in the kitchen and to Cliffo for your great work behind the bar – you are all definitely appreciated by everyone at the club.

This year our most prestigious award for Best Clubman, the Jimmy Fraser Award, goes to a bloke who does a lot of work behind the scenes and which has already been highlighted above. Congratulations to Steve Bohun.

Lastly, I would like to thank Dan, Madi and Caitlin. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. I have really enjoyed my work on the committee over the last 7 years and look forward to continued involvement behind the scenes and supporting the new committee. I would encourage all of you who haven’t thought about it before to put your hand up and help shape our club over the next decade as we start to reap the rewards of our successful Milo Program.

Thank you and Go Hawks!

Four of the MCC’s favourite and most hard working members. Left: Lena and JJ once again kept the boys well fed on a Thursday night, Jimmy looked after the bar and the players drinks every Saturday and Cliff was our No.1 barman as well as helping out where ever needed throughout the season. All of your efforts are much appreciated. Thanks guys ! MCC Award Winners Season 2013 / 2014

Representative Cricket Rab Noonan FTGDCA U12 Monbulk 1 st X1 – 2013 / 2014 – Captains Report

This season saw us back up in Norm Reeves Shield. We had a similar team with the return of Jason Fraser so expectations were to be finals or close to them. The season kicked off against Knoxfield. We bowled well to restrict them to 150, with the bat we had a little collapse early before Fraz and Azza steadied the ship and put us in a winning position with only 20 to get and 7 wickets in hand, we somehow managed to lose 7/15, a shattering loss first up. Round 2 saw us against a more fancied FTG, although outplaying them for the majority of the game we dropped that game too. Round 3 against UFTG was a repeat of Round 1 getting to a winnable position and going down again.

Sitting 0/3 with last year’s premiers Johnson Park to play next a must win game for us, we bowled first and in a great team performance we restricted them to 7/128 off their 40. A solid start with the bat from Tom and Blake put us in a good position before Brian and Azza saw us home in the last over. The following week we had a solid win over Belgrave to be 2/3 and back in the hunt. The next 2 games we went down to Knox Gardens and Eildon Park before facing Footballers in the game before Christmas. We were desperate for a win to keep our finals hopes alive, Footballers batted well making 4/160, we got off to a slow start before Blake steadied things up with the game going right down to the wire. Fraz controlled the situation making 59* winning off the last ball of the day. A great way to go into the Christmas break.

After Christmas things didn’t go to plan with our finals hopes gone after losing 4 in a row. Going into the last game we found ourselves on the bottom of the ladder facing relegation. The last game we faced Knox Gardens with them needing to win to hold on to a finals spot, so a game where both teams had plenty to play for. We won the toss and had a bat with Clarky and Bill getting off to a flyer. Azza was sent in at 3 to keep the run rate up and this payed off with Azza being there at the close of our innings on 76* with Blake chipping in with a run a ball 40 odd we managed our highest score for the year with 5/187. They got off to a quick start before Rico and Fraz, as they had done all year, come on to slow things down picking up a couple of wickets in the process but when they finished their spells the runs started to flow again. They got to 2/125 with under a run a ball required when Marto got a direct hit run out that changed the momentum of the game. From there they lost 8/35 to have them all out for 160 with Azza completing a great all round game taking 4 wickets and Macca doing the job at the other end. Walking off the ground it was like winning a final but we still had to see if results went our way, with phones out ringing around trying to get results, we had to wait about 20 mins before we got the call we were after. Everyone was wrapped although you never want to be in that position. We didn’t play well enough throughout the year but to our credit we played our best game when in counted. If only we had played more games like this, who knows what we might have achieved. It just goes to show how good we can be when we’re on.

POSITIVES FOR THE YEAR – Jason Fraser – his successful return to cricket after a couple of years off. He won the batting and bowling averages, a great effort considering he trained about 3 times for the year. Blake Walter – our leading run scorer was always going to have a lot of pressure after the season he had last year. He was only a bit of luck away from some big scores but still hit the ball well all year. Billie Hicken - going into Round 1, we didn’t have a keeper, he put his hand up and did a great job behind the stumps all year. Also might have found his spot as an opener doing a good job late in the year. Brian Martin – did a great job captaining the 20/20’s. Also had his first full year in the ones without making heaps of runs did a good job coming in late in tough situations needing quick runs. Richard Lamers – didn’t get a lot of wickets but I’d always turn to him to stop the scoring and always did the job. Aaron Powell- had another good all round year making 200+ runs and taking 18 wickets. It would have been easy to drop our heads and turn into a rabble with the results not going our way but we kept our heads up throughout the year and I think if we hadn’t of done that we would of lost the last game and found ourselves in Decoite Shield again.

Thanks to all the players for making my job easy each week, a great bunch of blokes to captain. A big thanks to Smithy for scoring again throughout the year I know I speak for everyone in saying we all appreciate what he does for us each week.

Thanks to Blake and Fogs for running training for most of the year after Stu had work commitments on, you both did a fantastic job. Also to Paul, Funk, Cliff, JJ, Steve and everyone who puts the time in all week to run the club it’s not an easy job and I really appreciate everything they do, without them the club would fall to pieces. Thanks to Warney and the captains for the efforts they put in for selections each week, often ringing people all Thursday night to try and get a fours team up.

All in all a disappointing year on the field as myself and most people at the club would of thought we could of done a lot better than second last but never the less we managed to stay up in Norm Reeves Shield which is always a good effort first year back up. Next year we will be stepping it up on and off the field to make sure we don’t find ourselves in the position again. Enjoy the off season.

Cheers Shane

Tuesday Night Saxon Sports T20’s 2013/14 This year the Monbulk T20 side had a new Captain and a new feeling. The side was once again made up through the best available side that could be thrown together for a Tuesday night. It was pleasing to see a core side made up of first eleven players and then some of the up and coming players in the club getting a crack against some good opposition.

In the end we only missed out on playing in the finals series by one victory and when we lost to Belgrave by three runs we could have easily been there. Some memorable moments in the games include, Shane hitting a big score over 70 against Belgrave, Tim Fogarty face planting while going for a catch in the same game, I got hit for a big six off of my first ball against Belgrave, Macca hit a 4 and then 6 off the last two balls of the innings to defeat Auravale, Peppa Pig taking 4 wickets in one game and more.

Overall there was plenty of positives from the T20 matches including Josh Rak and his bowling in the matches which was consistent and difficult to get away for even some of the better batters in the competition. A good effort by all involved and a positive competition for the club which showed improvement and reflected our attitude to improve in the shorter forms of the game.

Monbulk 2 nd X1 – 2013 / 2014 – Captains Report

I would like to congratulate every player who played a game in the 2nd XI this season. Every player who pulled on the Monbulk Cricket Club top played with great endeavour, passion and pride.

Our season was one of many ups and downs. The cricket god’s hit us hard early with the unexpected season ending knee injury to Nick Broekhof in the pre-season. But as one door closes another opens and this allowed for some of the fringe players to put their hand up and take their opportunity.

On the 5th of October 2013, we opened up our campaign in a one dayer against Knoxfield, which resulted in our first win for the season and we were away! We managed to hold a position in the top 4 for a couple of weeks, which was great for the lads and the club. As we pushed deep into December our form was up and down and we hit a bad patch before Christmas resulting in 3 straight losses. I told the boys to relax over Christmas and find some ‘mojo’ to get back on the winners list. Our first game back was against Upwey which resulted in a fantastic team win highlighted by Matt Neal’s 62 in his new role as an opening batsmen. But again our form went down as much as it went up with a close loss to Knoxfield, a great win against Ferntree Gully followed by a loss to Johnson Park and Knox Gardens to finish off the season giving us a 5 and 8 record and finishing 7th overall.

Throughout the season I was fortunate enough to debut a number players including Jack Heard, Dave Anselmi, Shannon Tibballs, Simon Lewis, Tim Greaves and under 15 player Hamish Emmett. Every player did a fantastic job and it’s a credit to your hard work at training and in the 3’s. A special thank you to Chris Defina for his efforts as Captain in my absence. Thank you to Cameron Anderson, Jason Simmonds and Duncan Maher in their role as vice captains throughout the season.

Congratulations to Daniel Clark, on making the only hundred in the 2’s this season with a 102 against Knox Gardens. Other honourable mentions with the bat include: Cameron Anderson 50* vs FTG, Liam Mackin 66 vs UFTG, Rick Lamers 61 vs Upwey, Michael Ramadan 52 vs FTG, Matt Tripp 60* vs Knox Gardens and Jason Simmonds 66* vs Belgrave.

Congratulation to Jason Simmonds on winning the Greg Hulm Batting award with 234 runs @ 46.8 – You efforts whilst playing in the 2nd XI were fantastic this season, I could always rely on you at the top of the order to get us away to a great start. I thank you for your leadership around the group and the advice and help you offered throughout the season. Congratulations to Craig Broekhof on taking the best bowling figures for the season with your amazing spell against Upper Ferntree Gully taking 6/27 off 23.2 overs on the trot. Other Honourable mentions – Matthew Nott 5/26 vs Belgrave, Matt Tripp 4/10 vs Knoxfield, Chris Defina 4/24 vs Upwey, Jason Dekkers 4/21 vs Knox Gardens and Hamish Emmett taking 1/2 on debut. I’m honoured to win the Mick Surwald bowling award taking 19 wickets @ 20.26 – I can only say that without my other bowlers bowling well and the boys in the field building pressure and holding catches I would not have been able to get those wickets so thank you for your efforts. The last award is the Greg Hulm MVP award – This player started the season horribly with the bat making 3 ducks and a high score of 3. His bowling however was great and I was able to rely on him to slow down the oppositions run rate whilst taking wickets. He fielded well and after Christmas exploded with the bat making score after score. He is a much loved player on and off the field and I hope he continues the massive drive from the beach to the hills and plays a massive part in the clubs future. Congratulations Matt Tripp with a Club Champion score of 42.1 narrowly beating myself by 1 point – well deserved mate!

When I look back and see losses of 3,4,12 and 17 runs, our season could have ended up A LOT different. It’s extremely important that we learn from these losses so we can convert them into wins. I look forward to seeing everyone at pre-season with the attitude of only finals cricket will do!

Monbulk 3 rd X1 – 2013 / 2014 – Captains Report

I'd like to firstly thank all the players that played along side me in the 3rd XI. You guys truly made my job an enjoyment every week. When our team was on our game we matched it with the best sides in our division (we were the only side to beat the eventual premiers twice).

With constant changes to the 1st and 2nd XI allowed the 3rd XI to blood another group of juniors this year. After playing a handful games with these young men our club has a strong group of players coming through.

I'd also like to congratulate Greg Hulm on his season, with our 4XI struggling for a game I asked Hulmy to come play with us. Once doing so he became an integral part of our side. He made 393 runs at 65.50 and also helping me with some senior advice about the team and how we should be playing.

Although not making finals by just 2 points for the 2nd year in a row our season had plenty of highlights. Our 3 leading wicket takers are all under the age of 16 – Josh Rak, Darcy Myring and Hamish Emmett. We also saw the rise of Jack Heard. Jack not only offered something with the ball but he established himself as someone that can bat.

My highlight of the year was our Round 12 win against Lysterfield, with a slight chance of finals to be played we posted a score of 9/295 and bowling them out for 228. This game showed us that if we batted our overs we could post competitive scores every week.

With the lessons learnt from this I hope that we can take that into next years pre-season and strive to improve as cricketers and as team mates.

Until next year, Fogs Signing off (Tim Fogarty)

Monbulk 4 th X1 – 2013 / 2014 – Captains Report

Not much of a year for the 4th XI with a combination of us struggling to field a side some weeks, our opposition doing the same and forfeiting and of course the weather as usual.

A big thanks goes out to everyone that filled in to try a get a team together. It was great to see some of the old faces out there again but it was really great to see some of the juniors put their hands up and fill the gaps.

We have some great young talent in these juniors and the more experience they get having a hit in the 4th XI, the better they will get as players .

We finished off the year with a big win against Rowville, which was the highlight of our year. The low light was when Spencer MARTO broke his leg when coming into bowl, it did give us some good photos though. Lets hope we have a better season next year.
