HUMAN RIGHTS IN HINDUISM By Ahmad Syarif H 1 ABSTRAK Konsep Hak Asasi Manusia dalam Agama Hindu sampai sekarang masih menjadi perdebatan. Hal ini disebabkan oleh adanya system kasta yang menjadi salah satu ajaran penting dalam agama Hindu yang mendapat legitimasi keagamaan seperti yang terdapat dalam Undang-Undang Manu. Undang-undang ini menegaskan bahwa apa pun yang dilakukan oleh umat Hindu berdasarkan kasta (Varna) yang mereka miliki adalah salah satu bentuk tugas (dharma) sebagai salah satu jalan untuk mengabdi kepada Tuhan. Sedangkan di sisi lain, Sistem Kasta dipandang cenderung membuat hirarki social dimana hal tersebut telah membatasi hak-hak asasi manusia yang dimiliki oleh setiap individu di dunia ini. Kata Kunci : Hak Asasi Manusia, Kasta, Hindu. Introduction Talking about Human rights in Hinduism can’t be separated from its concept of caste system. Caste system was always assumed that it limits and breaks the Human rights which are belong to all human being in his life. For Hindu people, making a relation between caste system and human rights is misleading. This concept for them does not have relation to caste system. Caste System which has legalization from Hindu Scriptures emphasizes that what Hindus do or have with their varna (caste) is duties (dharma)2 as a way to obedience to the God. Since most new religions are centred about charismatic religious leaders, the death of a founder presents his or her followers with a crisis which is crucial for the survival of the sect he or she has created. In the context of those religions which have South Asian origin, the charismastic leader is given particular emphasis as the guru, who is often, as David Miller says, ... at the centre of sacredness. Sacred texts and the worship of deities are secondary matters compared with the centrality of the guru whose interpretations of the texts are often looked upon as more sacred than the texts themselves.(2) In the Indian tradition, great importance is placed on the personal search for a guru; it is the divine mission of a seeker to encounter a knower of the truth.(3) Each individual guru is an institution in himself, whether he establishes one temple or monastery or many, and is obliged at the time of his death to seek some kind of continuity. -

Encyclopedia of Hinduism A project of India Heritage Research Foundation This summer marked a historic moment in the spiritual and cultural history of India: the completion and launch of the international edition of the Encyclopedia of Hinduism. Twenty-five years in the making, the product of more than 1000 esteemed scholars from around the world, totaling 11-volumes and approximately 7000 entries, the Encyclopedia of Hinduism is the first time in history that the depth and breadth of India’s great spiritual culture is made available in authentic, academic and scholastic form. The Encyclopedia is truly a compendium of thousands of years of history, science, art, architecture, polity, religion, philosophy and culture. Further, the Encyclopedia is not limited to Hinduism as a religion, but rather provides all inclusive treatment of India’s spiritual culture (including coverage of Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism traditions in India). The Encyclopedia was launched in India by the hands of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the international edition was launched in the United States by the University of South Carolina, Columbia. The United States’ event was organized, hosted and sponsored by the University and presided over by Dr. Harris Pastides, the President of the University and attended also by Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina and many eminent scholars. The Encyclopedia was conceived, inspired and blessed by one of India’s most beloved and revered spiritual leaders, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, the founder of India Heritage Research Foundation. These days, whichever sphere of reference to which one turns – science, engineering, medicine, philosophy, math or theology – one cannot ignore the role of India and Indians.
