Enable the players to play fast paced, exciting, fundamentally sound, and effective soccer.

Balance of technical, tactical, physical and psychosocial aspects of coaching, within every session.

Mission - We will continue to build everything about IHS women’s soccer from the ground up, with a fresh way of thinking. We intend to build a squad of athletes with an emphasis on trust, excellence, and enjoyment. The only way to achieve this ideal is by completely understanding our roles and having a team desire to make it happen. Programs (Varsity & JV)

Selection

IHS Women’s Soccer players are selected through a tryout process, overseen by the Varsity Head Coach and Assistant Coaches. The roster will be finalized after the third tryout. Selection is based upon form, fitness, ability, performance, effort, and attitude.

Varsity Commitment & Calendar - Five days a week from mid-February until mid/late May. - Two/three games per week. o Up to 28 games throughout (Depending on how far team goes in playoffs). o Game schedule available on team website. - Two/three practices per week. - Preseason conditioning (Optional, but highly recommended by Varsity Head Coach). - Mandatory Team building events, outside of team practice. - Preseason training. o Players must take responsibility to achieve and maintain the required fitness test levels throughout the season.

JV Commitment & Calendar - Five days a week from mid-February until mid/late May. - Two/three games per week. o Up to 23 games throughout the season. o Game schedule available on team website. - Two/three practices per week.

Independence High School Soccer Program Expectations THE GOLD STANDARD Team Expectations & Standards 1. Play fast paced, exciting and effective soccer. 2. Develop a winning mentality and attitude among the entire team and coaching staff. 3. Embrace an enthusiasm for this experience on and off the field. 4. Perform consistently and well under pressure. 5. Perform with the same mentality and intensity in practice as in games. 6. Ruthlessly dominate opponents physically and mentally for the entire game. 7. Team synergy that maximizes all player’s best efforts and potential. 8. Belief in the ability of yourself and your teammates. 9. Promote holistic development through soccer. 10. Develop an atmosphere of trust, excellence and enjoyment within the whole group. Player Expectations & Standards 1. Establish world class habits in your role. 2. Strive for your best effort potential in everything you do. 3. Maintain excellence in your studies, making up any work missed for early dismissals. 4. Practice how you play. Play with the same intensity in practice as in games. 5. Create a legacy. Be mindful of the history already created as you leave new footsteps for others to follow. 6. Effective communication is the essence of a great team. Learn from your mistakes, get performance feedback, ask questions, share information and celebrate success. Take corrective feedback as a compliment. 7. A quiet inner confidence based on detailed preparation and relaxed aggression. 8. Accept responsibility for outcomes. Look in the mirror first when improvement is required. 9. One voice… Do not interrupt coaches, or teammates when they are speaking. 10. A measure of ones character is in their impact on those who they care about.

7 11. Being an elite athlete involves choices you make on things you have control over – attitude and effort. In other words, character issues. 12. Ability to put the team before yourself in every decision. 13. Champions make the right decisions, not necessarily the easy ones. 14. Captains are required to meet with Coaches on a regular basis to discuss any issues arising.

8 Leadership is a skill – just like kicking a ball, it is a skill that can be practiced and improved.

Coaches Expectations & Standards 1. Set the standard for players, parents and the whole program to adhere to. 2. Place the emotional and physical wellbeing of every player ahead of any personal desire to win. 3. Respect all players, officials, spectators and opponents. 4. Act appropriately and professionally at all times, providing a safe, enjoyable and competitive environment for all team members. 5. Support and comply with the IHS Handbook and its policies. 6. Teach players how to win and lose gracefully: Humble in victory and dignified in defeat.

Parent Expectations 1. Fully support the program, as a whole. 2. Refrain from coaching from the sideline. 3. Show respect and good sportsmanship to all players, coaches, opposition, spectators, and officials. 4. Be excellent hosts and visitors; following any rules set in place when visiting other facilities. 5. Set a good example for your daughter to follow and hold them accountable. 6. Be a positive force in our program.

General Guidelines  Playing time is earned and coaches will select the strongest team available each game in order to get a positive result. o Selection is based upon form, fitness, ability, performance, effort and attitude. o Playing time will not be discussed with parents.  Players are expected to be on the field ready to begin practice and games at the designated time.  Players who need taping and/or have other requirements need to make sure this is done in advance so as to be on the field in time for warm-up.  Consequences for late arrivals / missed practices.  Players are required to attend all practices. o Missed practice(s) means that player will not start and/or play in the next match.

9  Players who know they will be late/absent, must inform the team captain AND coach as soon as possible, or risk further disciplinary action.  If a player has any issues or concerns, affecting performance, participation and/or overall enjoyment of being part of the IHS Soccer Program, they should communicate with a coach OR team captain immediately.

Practice Uniform

 Players are expected to have their own practice shirt, shorts, socks, shin guards, and cleats ready to go at all times.

Uniform

 Players will be given their uniform at the beginning of the season. They may keep up with it themselves if they desire to do so. If the player would like the coaches to wash and dry their uniform after each game they must place it in the jersey bag after each contest.  Players not returning their complete uniform at seasons end, will not attend the end of season banquet, and will be given a financial obligation form. They must pay for the cost of a replacement uniform.  IHS Soccer Uniform consists of: o 1 White Jersey o 1 Green Jersey o 1 pair green shorts o 1 team bag (Will be returned at the end of the season)

Game Day Routine (Home Matches)  Player/field preparation at the beginning of each match.  Warm up commence 30 minutes prior to kickoff. 10  Individual talks with starting 11 and captains at coach’s discretion during warmup.  Hydrate through-out warm up.  Team talk and ladders before going on field.  Half time – Head to corner flag for team talk.  End of game – Team talk, cool down, put equipment away.

Player Jobs Individual jobs will be assigned to each player after tryouts. Team captains and seniors are responsible for making sure players carry out their duties. Players not carrying out their assigned role or helping put equipment away will face disciplinary action.

 Corner flags o Before and after games.  Goals. o Set up at practice. o Set up for home games.  Set-up warm up before games  Ensure all balls are accounted for and all equipment locked away in shed.  Collect all other equipment to shed after home games and practice.  Clear all trash after games and practices. o Team bench  Take home all personal property.  Filling up water and bringing cooler to practice. Returning cooler after practice or game to athletic training room.

Discipline Procedure Any athlete not adhering to General Guidelines, Team Expectations and/or Player Expectations will suffer the following consequences: 11 1. First Offense: Disciplined and/or sit out the current/next practice/game. 2. Second Offense: Will not dress for next game (parents informed and meeting set up if necessary). 3. Third Offense: Permanently removed from the roster.

Independence High School Soccer Program Tryouts

Participation Clearance All forms and paperwork must be completed and returned to Coach Gibson during summer workouts. Players will not be allowed to tryout if forms are not completed by tryouts. The participation paperwork can be found at cmsathleticzone.com under the Independence home page. Navigate to the Forms & Info Tab and you can download it from there.

Dates & Processes  Tryouts will start early February.  All tryouts will be on practice field and players should arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to the start time, in order to check in.  All players must check in with Coach Gibson upon arrival to tryouts.

Squad Selection  Final squad selection will be announced after three tryouts and posted to the team website (cmsathleticzone.com)  A maximum of 20 places on each team squad. o The Varsity coach may choose to carry less.  Players who are not selected to be on a squad will be provided with feedback from the coaches upon request.

12  There may be opportunities for certain JV players to play for the Varsity team due to injuries, absences and a larger NCHSAA Playoff squad.  Returning players are not guaranteed a spot on the roster.  Varsity coach’s decision is final on all team selections.

Selection Criteria - Selection criteria is based on form, fitness, ability, performance, effort, and attitude. - Poor performance, attitude, behavior and/or attendance at any point in the season can and will cause players to be dropped from squad and/or removed from roster (see discipline procedure). - Players are assessed on the four pillars of the game of soccer:
