KYA Enrichment Class – 7th period – Mrs. Martineau Congratulations! Your former teachers have recommended you to participate in the Kentucky Youth Assembly Enrichment Class. The teachers and administration have recognized your leadership potential, work ethic and responsibility. This class will prepare you to represent Drake’s Creek Middle School at the Kentucky Youth Assembly in Louisville on November 15 – 17. What is KYA? The Kentucky Youth Assembly is a model government conference where over a thousand of Kentucky’s brightest teens will gather to debate the important legislative issues of the commonwealth. Taking over the Capitol Building to discuss their own ideas, the best students from around the state write bills and attempt to make them legislation as their own Representatives and Senators do from the same seats. Drakes Creek has a proud tradition of accomplishment and excellence in this program and we are proud to have you be a part of KYA this year. Is there a cost associated with attending the conference? Yes, there is a cost for this opportunity. This year the cost will be around $300.00 (+/-). This fee covers the cost of a charter bus, and registration. Most meals are included in this trip but your student will need enough additional money for two meals and spending money as parents see fit. Is there financial aid available? KYA does provide for need-based scholarships. Based on last year, however, the awards are small and limited. The school also had some anonymous donations last year, which helped to cover the costs of those students needing assistance. Is there a dress code for the trip? Yes, during the trip, you will be required to dress as a professional in business outfits. There will be detailed information given about the dress code as the time draws nearer to departure. Will parents be allowed to attend? Yes. We will need parent volunteers. There will be a room charge for parents who wish to attend. Again there is much more information to follow in the weeks to come. What will we be doing in class? We will be preparing bills, debating and voting for the bills we will submit and learning the process of the Kentucky Youth Assembly. All bills passed by the KYA and signed by the KYA governor, will be placed into a packet given to every state legislator before the following legislative session. Due to this, many bills written by KYA delegates later influence or become public policy in Kentucky. So now is the time for you to start thinking of creative bills that we can present!
Congratulations again for being recommended for this class! Sincerely, Kathleen Martineau
