March 2017 Dear members, The new cricket season rapidly approaches and plans are in-hand to build on the successes of 2016 which saw the 1st XI promoted to Division 1 of the DCCL and league and cup triumphs for the under 12, under 13 and under 15 sides. We will be running four senior teams and seven youth teams this season including an U17s’ team. The Captain of the 1st team is Ben Perry Taylor with Mike Jefferiss as Vice Captain. Captains of the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths are Ashley Spendlove, Neil Doxey and Andrew Redfern respectively with Vice Captains to be appointed. To date, we have signed 4 new players – Joe Greenhalgh from Denby, Rob Heath from Ambergate, Josh Pickering from Belper Amateurs and Gareth Wilson from Marehay. Scott Woodman, a 20 year old opening bowler, batsman and coach also joins us from Australia – we welcome them warmly and wish them all a very successful first season with W&MCC. The first matches are on Saturday April 22nd. The fixture card is available on Playcricket, will be sent by email soon and there will be card copies available in the Pavilions at both grounds. Training has taken place throughout the winter, including Chance To Shine coaching for club members and local schools. Saturday morning coaching sessions for 5 – 11 year old girls and boys will start on Saturday 25th April from 9.20 to 11.00 (10.30 for 5-7s), U11 to U13 players will train on Friday evenings and U15s on Tuesday evenings (starting dates and further age group details in due course). New young players, regardless of previous experience, are very welcome to join, just come down and talk to one of the coaches or email [email protected] for further information. In an exciting development, this spring the club will become an All Stars Cricket Centre. All Stars Cricket is a new national initiative developed by the ECB specifically for 5 to 8 year olds, backed by a nationwide media campaign and events in schools encouraging families with young children to get involved in cricket. The club is looking forward to All Stars giving new momentum to its established and well-loved activities for the youngest cricketers. For slightly older children, in the second week of the Easter holiday there will be a cricket camp for juniors at the Wirksworth ground and outdoor practice for all junior age groups will also start. Full details will be emailed to current players and distributed by schools in the near future, or you can contact Mike for information about these or any other cricket opportunities. A warm welcome is always on offer to new and existing players, families and spectators. The Playcricket website will be our main form of communication from now on. It is really important that members sign up - visit the club website at http://wirksworth.play-cricket.com, click the sign up button in the top right hand corner and follow the instructions. It is essential to give your email address. You will be able to see all the latest news, results and statistics. Membership forms are available on this site and
