Story: BhushanBanamali / Music panditRavisankar / Lyrics MeeraBhajans / The film is based on the life of Meera,MeeraBaia saint-poet who renounced princely comforts in pursuit of her love for Lord Krishna. The film portrays the life and times of Meera from a historical perspective. Through Meera's life, the director has shown a woman's struggle to find her independence, dignity and spiritual satisfaction in a society where women are supposed to be worthy of only taking care of the household chores. The epic soundtrack by Pt. Ravi Shankar features the lilting dulcet tones of the award winning playback singer VaniJairam, the tunes of which resound in every memory that reveres this winning combination of film music.
The story is set around 1580, in the time of King Akbar. Biramdevis the king of Medta, a province inRajasthan. He has two daughters, Meera) and Krishna and a son, Jaimal. Meera is in deep emotional love with Lord Krishna, so much so that she considers Lord Krishna to be her husband. Akbar is becoming stronger day by day and hence other small provinces are trying to join against him. Medta, in one such political agreement, decides to join hands with Raja Vikramajit (ShammiKapoor). As a part of this agreement Meera is married (against her wish) to Vikramajit's son, RanaBhojraj. But even after getting married her love for Lord Krishna remains the same and she follows her own ideals and way of living which are not very acceptable to Bhojraj and his family. One thing leads to another and one day Meera is declared as an outcast and traitor who failed to play a wife's duties towards her husband, a bride's duties towards her family, and a woman's duties towards society. She is jailed and a public trial is ordered to decide her fate. But Meera is still unshakable and her spirituality keeps her going. She is not even afraid of death. Finally she is given a death sentence and is ordered to drink a cup of venom in front of the public. The film was based on the characters Goopy Gyne and BaghaByne, It won the Best Feature Film and Best Direction awards at the 16th National Film Awards, and went on to win many other international awards as well. itwas hailed as the most innovative movie to have ever come out of India. The story revolves around GopinathGyne (Goopy), the son of a poor grocer KanuKyne from a village called Amloki. Goopy wants to become a singer but has a hoarse voice. Persuaded by village elders to sing for the king, he does so and is driven out of Amloki on a donkey for waking the king with his terrible singing. Exiled into a forest, he meets Bagha, another exile from nearby Hortuki sent to the forest , for playing a drum badly. They start singing and drumming, initially to scare off a roaming tiger, and in the process they attract a group of ghosts who are fascinated by their music. The king of ghosts grants them three boons:They can get food and clothes whenever needed by clapping their hands,They are given a pair of magic slippers with which they can travel anywhere, They gain the ability to hold people in awe (literally, their music renders people motionless) with their music. They travel to Shundi, where a benevolent king appoints them court musicians. However the king of Halla (the long lost brother of the king of Shundi) is planning to attack Shundi, after being poisoned with magic potion that makes him evil, given to the king of Halla by his self-centered prime minister. Goopy and Bagha travel to Halla in an attempt at preventing the attack, but are captured instead. Since they have now lost their slippers, they can't escape by magic, but manage to do so instead by strategy. They arrive singing and drumming when the soldiers are about to launch their attack, capturing the king of Halla, who is returned to Shundi. The two brothers are reunited and Goopy and Bagha marry the daughters of the two kings. Other noted artists, who worked on soundtrack were, Sarangi performer, Ustad Sultan Khan, and noted flautist, RonuMajumdar, Story: Pallavi, a budding Indian classical singer, is the daughter and student of celebrated classical singer, Karuna Devi. While she was still gaining her confidence, her mother expires suddenly; due this shock Pallavi loses not just her bearings, but also her voice. Subsequently she also loses her career, her students, and her husband.It is only after she meets a young street urchin, Tara and start teaching her, following the guru- shishyaparamparaof Indian classical music, as her mother once did with her, does she begin to finds herself again, and also her voice. BBC Channel 4 reviewed the film as, "A celebration of the classical singing tradition set in contemporary New Delhi,RajanKhosa's film captures the beauty of ancient Indian music and the culture from which it emanates."
