KIMBALL HIGH SCHOOL MATH DEPARTMENT ALGEBRA II COURSE SYLLABUS 2012-2013 Instructor: Thomas Reynolds Email: [email protected] Room: G-7 Helpful Websites: Brightstorm.com, Khan Academy and Onlinemath.com Office Hours: 7:45 – 8:15 before school Course Description: Algebra II is aligned with the California State Standards and Framework. It is offered to high school students who have a strong knowledge of Algebra I and Geometry. Course Outline: The topics covered in this course will include: Equations and inequalities Exponential and logarithmic functions Linear equations and functions Rational equations and functions Systems of linear equations and inequalities Quadratic relations and conic sections Quadratic functions Sequences and series Polynomials and polynomial functions Probability and statistics Powers, roots and radicals Study skills and test taking skills Homework: Homework will be assigned, graded and recorded everyday. Assignments and grades will be posted online daily for parents and students. Project reminders and grades will be sent out to parents and students who sign into the parent link. This is extremely helpful and should be done immediately by contacting the front office. Required Materials: Each student is required to bring to class:  2 Pencils (preferably mechanical) and soft white eraser  3-ring binder with 5 dividers (warm ups/notes, graph paper, tests/quizzes, model problems and worksheets)  College ruled, 8 ½” x 11” three hole binder paper in binder – no spiral bound notebooks for homework  2 dry erase markers to use for individual white boards  12” Ruler and color pens for correcting  Graph paper  3 x 5 index cards for making flashcards  Basic scientific calculator (Ti-30X recommended)  Textbook unless otherwise stated Attendance: Absences and late arrivals must be cleared in the attendance office. Due to the abundance of group work, class discussion, and in-class activities that cannot be duplicated outside the classroom, regular attendance is vital. Students will be assigned seats and groups to work in. Tardy Policy: Students are expected to be in their seats ready to work when the bell rings. The school tardy policy, as written in the student handbook, will be followed. Make-up/Late work Policy: Students will have the same number of days that they were absent from school to make up work for an unexpected excused absence. However, to avoid falling behind, students should try to complete and bring all missed homework the day they return to class. Students who are absent can find the assignments posted online. Students who are on suspension may do the assigned work for full credit. Makeup homework from absent students needs to be turned in separately and put into the teacher’s makeup basket. No late work will be accepted. Bathroom Passes: No bathroom passes will be given during the first or last 10 minutes of class or in the middle of a test or problem explanation. Students should wait for an appropriate time. Students will be given three bathroom passes each semester and then serve detention for each additional pass. Class Rules and Consequences: All school rules apply. Please remove your hat and groom yourself before entering the classroom. If a student chooses to break a rule, appropriate action will be taken. Depending on the severity of the infraction, this could include a written assignment concerning the student’s behavior, detention, seating change, alternate classroom placement, call to parent and/or a referral to the administration. Make-up, food, books or homework from other classes that are out in class will be placed on the teacher’s desk and picked up after school. Cell phones that are out in class will be sent to the office.

Basic Rules and Procedures 1. Bring two pencils, a binder and your completed homework to class. 2. Please sit down, take out your homework and start the warm up when you enter the classroom. 3. Work quietly in your seat and raise your hand if you have a question. 4. No hats, cell phones, food, make-up, electronic devices, negative comments, profanity, sunglasses, lotion, hairbrushes, gum or drinks are allowed in class. Please keep backpacks and handbags on the floor or on the back counter. 5. Please wait for the teacher to dismiss you at the end of class.

Assignments: All work must be done in pencil with each problem number circled, answers boxed, work shown, calculations done neatly and sketches drawn carefully to receive credit. The upper right corner must have your full name, date, period, assignment number, page and problems. Homework Policy: Homework will be stamped at the beginning of class and given 10 points based on work shown, a reasonable attempt to complete the problems and your corrections made in class. Homework that is incomplete, messy, missing the proper heading and/or not in pencil will receive half credit. (See student handbook for board policy 6154 regarding homework.)

 90 -100% A  80 – 89% B  70 – 79% C  60 – 69% D  0 – 59% F Grading Policy:  Tests, Quizzes and District Assessments (roughly 60%)  Homework and Binder Checks (roughly 30%)  Classwork (roughly 10%) Grades will be based on bringing all materials, participating in all activities, doing all the warm-up exercises, answering questions, explaining problems, working together in groups and showing respect for the people and materials in class.  TA’s must be present and working 80% or more school days to pass. Semester grades will be weighted as follows: Total points earned during semester 80% Semester Final Exam 20% Cheating: Cheating is a serious offense and will result in a “0” for the assignment, test or quiz. Classroom Donations: You may donate a box of Kleenex (tissue) or a Ti-30x calculator (about $9). These donations will be greatly appreciated and made available to all students. Study Skills: The best way to help your son or daughter succeed in math is to ask him or her to explain a few homework problems to you everyday. This kind of review not only helps students remember the material but also encourages them to pay attention in class. A question a day = an “A”. (Keep this sheet in your binder for reference and future binder checks – 10 points.) I have read the above information and understand the classroom policies, rules and procedures.
