1. Exercise while attendance is taken: Copy Trivia question from board; get assigned textbook.

2. Instructions & Activities A. Handout the Outline Map of BNA, 1853 (RSS 22). Using pages 82-89 in the textbook, identify the diverse peoples in BNA in the mid-1850s. Make a legend of the various groups of people (British elite, British immigrants, Irish immigrants, French in Canada East, Acadians, Aboriginal Peoples (First Nations and Inuit), Métis, Black Loyalists, and Black colonists). Read the section on the British elite (page 82) and discover where they lived. Using one colour, place a large dot on each part of the map on which they lived, and colour the square in the legend the same colour. Do this for each group. If the textbook does not indicate where they lived, just colour the legend. If you have enough different overhead marker colours, the information can be displayed on the overhead as it is discovered by the students.

3. Leave time for them to put away their textbooks. Remind them to push in their chair, or put them on the desks if they are the last class of the day.
