HEAT ADVISORY INFORMATION: The McLean County Emergency Management Agency is encouraging citizens to keep cool as temperatures rise to the uppers 90’s during what the National Weather Service advises as a “heat wave”, a period of extreme heat accompanied by high humidity. “We want to remind residents to be careful of heat related illness and to utilize the cooling centers located throughout the County” EMA Director, Curtis Hawk said. “I also encourage everyone to be good neighbors and to check on the elderly, who often easily become victims of extreme heat”. We advise that the residents stay inside, especially in air conditioning whenever possible. If you do not have an air conditioner, use State owned facilities, the libraries, Malls, Police and Fire Stations, Village Halls and other public spaces that are cool. We urge the residents to be on the alert for signs of the different stages of heat stress that may be caused by dangerously high temperatures and we issue the following precautions: • Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible and in the shade if you go outside. • If your home is not air conditioned, spend at least two hours daily at an air conditioned mall, library or other public place. • Wear sunscreen outside, along with light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible. • Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. • Never leave children or pets alone in the car • Avoid exertion during the hottest part of the day. • Take a cool shower or bath if you get too hot. Another suggestion is to utilize the local pools and aquatic centers for cooling off. Symptoms of heat exhaustion: • Dizziness • Fatigue • Nausea • Great weakness • Excess sweating • Headache • Faintness • Cold, pale, clammy skin If you suspect heat exhaustion; • Get to shade or a cool area • Lie down • Loosen clothing • Apply cool compresses • Drink Fluids Symptoms of Heat Stroke: • High body temperature • Hot red, dry skin • Rapid pulse • Unconsciousness ACT QUICKLY if you suspect Heat Stroke; • Call for Medical Attention • Get to cool spot • Loosen clothing • Cool body down quickly with compresses, water Please check on pets and your neighbors regularly.
