LAB LESSON - CONDITIONALS

Zero Conditional First Conditional If + Present Simple, Present Simple If + Present Simple, will/can + infinitive

1. General truths e.g. If I win the lottery, I will travel around the world. e.g. If/Whenever ice melts, it becomes water. Unless I win the lottery, I will not/ won’t travel around the world. 2. Rules (I don't know if I win but there is a possibility) e.g. If you wave a red flag, it means danger.

Second Conditional Third Conditional If + Past Simple, would/could + infinitive If + Past Perfect, would/could + have + PP e.g. If I won the lottery, I would travel e.g. If Christopher Columbus hadn’t discovered around the world. America, the history of the world would have been different.

(But I didn't win the lottery, and it’s very (But he had discovered America and it’s impossible unlikely that I will win) to change)

Zero Conditional First Conditional If + Present Simple, Present Simple If + Present Simple, will/can + infinitive e.g. If I have time, I study English. e.g. If I have time, I will study English.

(I sometimes have time) (I don't know if I will have time or not) Second Conditional Third Conditional If + Past Simple, would/could + infinitive If + Past Perfect, would/could + have + PP e.g. If I had time, I would study English. e.g. If I had had time, I would have studied English. (I don't have time) (I didn't have time)

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences in the Zero and First Conditional.

1. If I ______(read) too long, my eyes usually______(go) red. 2. If I ______(go) to bed early, I normally ______(get up) early too. 3. If the weather ______(not/change), we ______(not/climb) to the top. 4. If you ______(speak) English and French, you ______(can/work) at the Council of Europe. 5. If I ______(win) the lottery, I ______(travel) around the world. 6. My boss ______(get) angry, if I ______(be) late for work. 7. If it ______(snow) tomorrow, we ______(can/go) skiing. 8. People ______(get) hungry, if they ______(not/eat). 9. My dad ______(wash) his car if it ______(not/rain) on Saturday. 10. Exercise 7: Complete the following sentences in the Second Conditional and answer the questions.

1. If the weather (to be) nice, we would go swimming. Is the weather nice today? yes or no? Are we going to go swimming? yes or no?

2. My family would go to the zoo if the weather (to be) nice. Is the weather nice? yes or no? Is my family going to the zoo? yes or no?

3. If I (to buy) a lottery ticket, I could win the lottery. Did I buy a lottery ticket? yes or no? Can I win the lottery? yes or no?

4. My brother would drive to school if he (to have) petrol in his car. Does my brother have petrol in his car? yes or no? Will he drive to school? yes or no?

5. My mom would bake a cake if she (to have) enough flour and sugar. Does she have enough flour and sugar? yes or no? Will she bake a cake? yes or no?
