Progress in delivering proposals to improve breastfeeding services and rates

Validated Data as at Q4 09/10:

 Initiation Rates are 70.1%. There was a data quality anomaly at Qu.2 09/10 which was not repeated in Q 3 and 4 but may need investigation to ensure data quality remains exemplary  Initiation data completeness – currently excellent at 100%  Breastfeeding Coverage at 6-8 weeks – currently excellent at 99.5%, is above target and well above the national average  Breastfeeding Prevalence at 6-8 weeks is at 43.8%, just below the national average of 45.2% for the equivalent period  Breastfeeding drop off rate (the difference between initiation rate and 6-8 week prevalence rate in percentage points) is at 26.3% i.e. better than the national average of 27.5%  Early booking remains a challenge for Maternity Services  Solihull ‘Be a Star’ social Marketing Campaign to encourage young women to breastfeed.  Peer Support across the borough is delivered in partnership with Children’s Centres  Peer Support: Solihull is working with the National Childbirth Trust in a project to train peer supporters from within groups least likely to breastfeed. This commenced in Sept 2010.

Performance Against 6-8 week Prevalence Indicator:

RAG: RED

Breastfeeding initiation targets have been met. However, the 6-8 week prevalence stretched target has not been achieved. Plans for 2011/2 can be set at rates based on current excellent data coverage/completeness.
