Text: Elementary Statistics, 6th Edition (Larson/Farber) Scientific calculator (must not be on a phone or web-based device) for homework, class work and some tests.
Course description/objectives: develop: a good foundation of descriptive statistics a good foundation of inferential statistics an appreciation for analysis ability to apply statistical analysis to real world situations confidence in one’s quantitative abilities topics include: descriptive statistical methods probability basics, probability distributions statistical inference hypothesis testing correlation regression analysis of variance
Method of evaluation: - quizzes/tests 75% - homework assignments 25%
There will be 5 short quizzes, 2 tests (date subject to change) and a Final Exam. Quiz dates: 4/11, 4/19, 5/8, 5/17, 6/8 Test dates; 4/27, 5/30 Final Exam: 6/16, 10:30 AM
The quizzes (< 15 minutes each) will be based on previous homework problems and problems done in class. Each quiz is worth 10 points. The tests will be 60 minutes and each is worth 35 points. The final exam will be worth 60 points.
Homework: Required homework is due at 11AM on the specified day; any homework handed in after 11AM will be marked late and points deducted. (Do not expect to finish your homework 5 minutes before class is to begin.) A ‘random’ sample of each assignment will be marked/graded. Please include your name and date due on the front page. Homework must be neat, stapled, completed in pencil, and with problems clearly stated; homework not meeting these standards will not be graded. Graph paper may be required for some assignments.
Recommended homework problems will be given on the website. Complete as many of the problems necessary to understand the material in the text and concepts presented in class. The assigned/recommended problems will be used as the basis for quizzes and test. Doing additional problems is encouraged.
There may be a few review exercises to be handed in throughout the quarter.

No incompletes will be given.
No use of cell phones or mobile devices during class.
Only under extreme circumstances (at instructor’s discretion) can a test/quiz be made up (limit 1 per quarter).
Studying in groups is encouraged. Students are expected to attend every class and to arrive on time. Please discuss any anticipated absences with the instructor.
Students are expected to actively participate in class.
Students are expected to spend 2 hours of outside study time for each hour of class time.
Students are expected to read each section before it is presented in class.
