Admission Steps for the Practical Nurse Program Emily Griffith Technical College

1. Attend a Practical Nurse Informational Meeting which is offered monthly.

2. Complete the school application available online at www.EmilyGriffith.edu. . A government-issued picture ID is required. Registration hours are: Monday – Wednesday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m..

3. Complete the free practical nurse assessment test at Emily Griffith Technical College, Testing Center, Room 205. Walk-in start times are: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Allow 1.5 hours for each test, reading and math. Test only when you are feeling healthy and rested. You may complete the reading and math assessments on different days (recommended). Passing scores for practical nursing are: Reading 12.0 or higher on a timed TABE A and 80% or higher on the Practical Nursing Math Exam. A math practice is available by emailing your Health Programs Advisor. Students will receive test scores after testing. A practice math test is available at the informational meeting. Repeat tests without remedial courses are $5. Students need to wait four weeks before retesting. Assessment tests for the practical nursing program from other schools are not accepted. Test scores are good for one year.

4. Call 720 423- 4712 to schedule an appointment with the Health advisor. This is when we will review your test scores, discuss remedial courses, review transcripts and develop your class schedule. You may register for any of the prerequisite courses if your reading score is 12.0 or higher. If your reading score is below 12.0, an appointment is required.

5. Remedial reading courses are advised for scores below the practical nursing requirements of 12.0 Reading on a timed TABE A. Remedial math courses are advised for scores below the 80% score on the Nursing Math Exam. Retesting is required upon completing the remedial courses. Repeating remedial courses may be necessary.

6. Refer to the Practical Nurse Prerequisite Course Schedule for times and dates.

Nurse Aide Certification (NUA 101 and NUA 170) also called C.N.A. license If you currently hold a Colorado Certified Nurse Aide/C.N.A. card issues by the State Board of Nursing, skip the next paragraph and move on to the other prerequisite information.

12/13/17 1 If you do not have a current Colorado Certified Nurse Aide Certification, you will need to enroll in nurse assistant/home health aide courses (NUA 101/170). You may enroll in NUA 101 and 170 while you are enrolled in remedial reading courses for the nursing program provided your reading score is 8.0 or higher. Schedule your Colorado Nurse Aide Certification exam with the State Board of Nursing as soon as possible. Currently the testing is done through www.PearsonVue.com for $95. Refer to the C.N.A. flyer.

The following practical nurse prerequisite courses require a minimum reading score of 10.0. Prerequisites are offered daytime hours and not offered summer session. Refer to practical nurse prerequisite schedule.

HPR 178 Medical Terminology (2 credits) This course is offered 3 times each semester. Classes meet twice per week for four weeks. Each class session is 3 hours on Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning. HPR 178 (1 credit) does not meet the requirement. As of 4/5/2013 HPR 178 is strongly recommended, but not required.

ENG 121 English Composition (3 credits) This course is offered daytime only at 9-week intervals including start dates in Aug., Oct., Jan. and March. Students complete 45 hours of class time with a flexible schedule 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Monday-Friday. Students must attend the first day of class and a weekly one-hour lecture from noon to 1 p.m., the one day of the week will be announced by the instructor. With an official transcript, credits for ENG 121 and higher are accepted from any public Colorado community college.

HPR 108 Dietary Nutrition –Students must attend the first day for this online two-month course. HWE 100 Human Nutrition (3 credits) which is an RN prerequisite, is accepted, but not offered at Emily Griffith Technical College.

BIO 106 Basic Anatomy and Physiology --Basic Anatomy and Physiology/ BIO 106 is offered once per semester. Some community colleges do not accept BIO 106 as transfer credit from Emily Griffith Technical College; however, with an official transcript, it is transferable from any public Colorado community college to Emily Griffith Technical College. Completion of both BIO 201and 202 (8 credits for both) are accepted as meeting the BIO 106 requirement.

Challenging (testing out of) Prerequisite Courses—each prerequisite course may be challenged one time for $25. This is an opportunity to take the final exam and demonstrate your subject knowledge without taking the course. Successfully challenging a course means that requirement has been met. Failing a challenge exam requires that you enroll in the prerequisite course. 12/13/17 2 Transferring Prerequisite Credits- Courses taken within the public Colorado Community College System may be accepted for grades of C or higher if they are within the required time frame of 5 years prior to the first day of the practical nurse program. The course number must match or a course syllabus will be required. Courses must have the same or greater number of credits. Official transcripts should be mailed to yourself in a sealed envelope. Do not open the transcripts. Credits from proprietary schools are not accepted.

Transferring Practical Nurse Program (NUR) Credits Students must take a minimum of 13.5 credits from the Emily Griffith Practical Nursing program to be granted a certificate of completion if they are transferring credit from another Nursing Program. In addition to all items on the check list, students transferring from another nursing program need a letter of recommendation from the Director of Nursing from the previous nursing program and official transcripts. Official transcripts should be mailed to yourself in a sealed envelope. Do not open the transcripts. Credits from proprietary schools are not accepted.

7. *****Pre-admission meeting to submit your portfolio and official transcripts***** When you have completed all of the requirements and prerequisite courses and organized a portfolio of documentation for each requirement and made copies for a second portfolio to keep for yourself, schedule an appointment with the Practical Nursing Advisor by emailing [email protected] . Bring your portfolio and signed check list for review. Only completed portfolios are accepted. Once you have submitted your completed portfolio, you will be on the wait list for the next available start date. Official transcripts should be mailed to yourself in a sealed envelope. Do not open the transcripts.

8. Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid/FAFSA/ financial aid application. FAFSA Help: For assistance completing the financial aid application, call 720 423-4744. Financial Aid Office at Emily Griffith Technical College is located in the registration area. Prerequisite courses are not eligible for federal financial aid.

Payment plans: Courses longer than 2 months may be paid in installments for a charge of $20 per semester. Short courses must be paid in full at the time of registration. Contact the Treasurer’s Office, Room 239; phone 720 423-4786 for payment plan information.
