January 2010

Dear Candidate,

My name is Rachel Carr and I am one of the founders of IntoUniversity and its current CEO. We’re an award winning charity that provides an education programme addressing underachievement and social exclusion. We target children and young people most at risk of failing to meet their potential to go to university due to economic, social, cultural, or linguistic disadvantage. At the heart of our programme is the belief that underachievement is best addressed in the context of a long-term pastoral engagement with young people where we can build their esteem and support their learning to enable them to reach their potential to go to university or realise another chosen aspiration.

Our education programme has been running for seven years in North Kensington. It has received external accreditation and is highly respected. It was externally evaluated in 2007 by the National Foundation for Educational Research and we became a charity in our own right the same year. Our current business plan, which ends in 2016, committed us to a 12 centre network in London, to developing our internal procedures and systems and to launching major fundraising and communications campaigns. With six centres currently, we are on target to achieve our plan and are now looking forward to ambitious future plans to scale-up our service provision further by opening new centres and developing strategies for larger scale replication across London and/or in other major cities.

At this exciting time in our evolution we are now looking for a high-calibre graduate to take up an exciting new internship in our Head Office. The internship will provide opportunities to gain experience in a range of key areas, events management and social media in particular. By the end of the internship the candidate will have developed a new internet ‘blog’ for IntoUniversity, planning the project from start to finish by conducting research and gathering relevant content. The internship will also involve the chance to gain some experience of event management, as the candidate will be required to support our Events Committee. You will be supervised by the Development Officer (Media & Administration).

You will be highly self-motivated, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will have passion and enthusiasm for the mission of our charity. You will also have experience of social media and an interest in education policy and social justice. Please find further details of the post below.

If you wish to apply for this post please email your application by 9am on Monday 15th February 2010 to [email protected]. If you are successfully shortlisted, the selection process will take place on Thursday 25th February 2010.

Thank you for your interest in this post.

4 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The distinctive features of our IU model are:

We offer a Centre-based service away from school. Our education centre is a distinctive place of belonging for students, chosen by them and available all year round.

We are a ‘home-from-home’ rather than a ‘school-from-school’. We are not trying to supplement schools’ work but to provide the kind of academic support and personal expectation that is a matter of course in many middle-class families.

We use a pastoral model. We see the affirmation and emotional security of the learner as essential to academic achievement. We build sustained relationships with students from year 3 which are never just about academic attainment and learning.

We maintain a high staff/student ratio. This is crucial for both the quality of the educational support and the maintenance of pastoral relationships. It enables the development of positive, affirming relationships with young people who receive substantial individual attention.

We have excellent existing educational partnerships at local and national level. Our partners include the Sutton Trust, Rugby School, the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, Aim Higher London, The Country Trust, 38 local primary and secondary schools, Brunel University, Westminster University, Imperial College, University College London, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Goldsmith’s College, the Royal Veterinary College, King’s College.

We start working with young people from age eight and work with them over the long term until university access. Academic research shows that access to university from socially- excluded groups needs children to aspire to future study from a young age.

We provide a positive aspirational ethos. We believe children and young people can succeed in life and that their decisions and the attitudes they have help shape their futures for good or bad. We work to promote good behaviour, pride in achievements and a positive, safe and stimulating out-of-school environment.

We take a multi-stranded approach. We recognise that young people require many types of support in order to raise and attain their aspirations: academic support, new learning opportunities, aspirational activities and confidence building.

The Components of IU

▶ Primary & Secondary Academic Support: Tutored help with homework, coursework, literacy and numeracy.

▶ Weekday Walk-in: Providing one-to-one support with: GSCE, AS, A-level and degree options; coursework, revision and examination techniques; and UCAS forms, interview techniques and gap years.

▶ Holiday FOCUS weeks: Subject-based weeks of challenging and stimulating activities promoting a love of learning and culminating in a visit to a university and a graduation day for young people aged between nine and 18.

5 ▶ Primary FOCUS Weeks & Days: Themed weeks and days of out-of-school experiential learning for Years 5 and 6. Classes come with their teacher to an IntoUniversity centre and engage with hands-on activities linked to the National Curriculum. They also visit a university and enjoy a graduation.

▶ Secondary FOCUS Workshops: An innovative series of workshops for Years 11-13 designed to give students a clear understanding of what a university is, why they should aspire to enter Higher Education, what impact it will have on their future lives and what qualifications they need to attain to apply to university.

▶ Extending Horizons FOCUS Weekends: These educational weekends give young people experiences most of them would not have otherwise. They help to raise young people’s aspiration and motivation to achieve at school and promote the importance of team building.

▶ Mentoring: We work with the University of London pairing undergraduates with our users. The programme promotes self-worth, social development, responsibility and aspiration.

▶ Aspire & Achieve Days: Training days to encourage and motivate young people. The Go For It! programme we use is proven to raise academic standards and aspirations.
