1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND DECLARE MAY 2, 2017, AS 12 “PALMETTO GIVING DAY” IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 13 14 Whereas, Georgetown County, by a grassroots collection of local 15 nonprofit organizations and facilitated by the Frances P. Bunnelle 16 Foundation, has organized an annual twentyfour hour online 17 giving event to be held on the first Tuesday of May, known as 18 Palmetto Giving Day; and 19 20 Whereas, philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the 21 common good. This tradition of giving and sharing is paramount to 22 a higher quality of life and is an investment in our community to 23 hold steadfast the values we cherish which will define our future; 24 and 25 26 Whereas, the goal for this day is to raise five hundred thousand 27 dollars among all of the participating organizations in support of 28 growing the Georgetown community; and 29 30 Whereas, thirtythree organizations have banded together for the 31 sake of this philanthropic day. The nonprofit organizations 32 involved include A Father’s Place, Amazing Journey, Avian 33 Conservation Center, Barnabas Horse Foundation, Bible Way 34 Community Learning Center, Brookgreen Gardens, Carolina 35 Human Reinvestment, Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation, 36 Children’s Recovery Center, Dragon Boat at the Beach, Family 37 Justice Center of Georgetown and Horry counties, Freedom 38 Readers, Friends of Coastal South Carolina, Friendship Place Inc., 39 Georgetown County Family YMCA, Good Friends of Georgetown 40 County, Habitat for Humanity Georgetown County, Helping 41 Hands of Georgetown, Inc., Hugs for Horses Therapeutic Riding 42 Program, Miss Ruby’s Kids, Murrells Inlet 2020, Pawley’s Island

[4139] 1 1 Child Development Center, Pee Dee Community Project, Rape 2 Crisis Center Serving Horry and Georgetown counties, Saint 3 Frances Animal Center, Smith Medical Clinic, South Carolina 4 Environmental Law Project, Teach My People, The Cultural 5 Council of Georgetown County, The Mitney Project, The Village 6 Group, Tidelands Community Hospice Foundation, and Winyah 7 Rivers Foundation. On this first annual Palmetto Giving Day, these 8 organizations are participating in a collective effort to make 9 Georgetown and South Carolina a better place to live, work, and 10 play; and 11 12 Whereas, this passion project was created in response to the 13 incredible results gained from Lowcountry Giving Day, a regional 14 day of giving hosted through the Coastal Community Foundation 15 in Charleston. A few years ago, Lowcountry Giving Day was 16 among the most successful days of giving in the entire nation. In 17 2016, approximately twentyfour Georgetown County nonprofits 18 collectively raised $369,000 in the twentyfour hour online giving 19 event. When it was announced that Lowcountry Giving Day would 20 not be done this year, a group of nonprofit leaders got together to 21 create an alternative in order to continue the growth in 22 Georgetown; and 23 24 Whereas, the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation in Pawleys Island 25 has been instrumental in encouraging and facilitating this event. 26 The foundation made a five thousand dollar grant to purchase the 27 hosting platform services of Kimbia, a main host site for Give 28 Local. This allows people to make donations online, which helps 29 increase the amount of donations collected; and 30 31 Whereas, in addition to the grant, Ashley Nelson of the Bunnelle 32 Foundation has been working as project manager of Palmetto 33 Giving Day, selflessly giving of her time and expertise for the 34 coordination of this event; and 35 36 Whereas, Kimbia will do the detail work for Palmetto Giving Day, 37 which includes website design, collection of contributions, and 38 issuing checks to the nonprofits. On May 2, the website will 39 feature a leaderboard showing the contributions each of the 40 thirtythree nonprofits have received during this effort; and 41 42 Whereas, any time citizens of South Carolina come together in an 43 effort to better our State for the future of all is a beautiful day in

[4139] 2 1 the Palmetto State. The members of the House of Representatives 2 commend the efforts these nonprofits have put forth for the future 3 of our communities. Now, therefore, 4 5 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 6 7 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 8 by this resolution, recognize and declare May 2, 2017, as 9 “Palmetto Giving Day” in South Carolina. 10 XX 11
