COURSE DESCRIPTION

EN4950 English Internship (variable credit – up to 12 credits) Advanced Study in Writing or Advanced Study in Literature and Film. Offers a culminating experience for English majors and minors in their junior or senior year. Students work in professional settings related to the field under the supervision of the Director of Practica/Internships. Individual enrollment. Pass/No Pass credit. Prerequisite(s): permission of the English Department Chair and the Director of Practica/Internships.

Prerequisites:  junior or senior status  approval of Department Chair

INSTRUCTIONS for STUDENTS

Suggested coursework prior to internship: Studies In English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Technical Communication, Advanced Composition, Practicum in Publication

STEPS TO TAKE: 1. Discuss the possibility of doing an Internship with your English Department academic advisor. 2. Fill out page 2 of this Intent to Intern before meeting with English Department Chair. Make an appointment with the English Department Chair to create a preliminary plan including discussion of learning outcomes. The chair will determine eligibility for the English internship by signing the Intent to Intern form. 3. If approved by English Department Chair, make an appointment to see an advisor at the Global Education Office: Internships. 4. Submit the signed/approved Intent to Intern form to the administrative assistant when making the initial intake appointment with an advisor at the Global Education Office: Internships. 5. At the intake appointment with advisor, the student will present a fully-developed resume and writing sample. Learning outcomes, possible placement site suggestions, geographic potential for sites, and appropriate employers that might be able to meet some or all of the learning objectives which are uniquely tied to the geographic employer potential will be discussed.

NOTE: Internship placement is not automatic with employers and there is no guarantee an employer will accept a student for an internship with their organization.

During your internship, you can expect an evaluative visit by your Internship Instructor. They will prepare you in advance for this visit. In some instances, an English Department faculty member may elect to accompany the Internship Instructor on this visit.
