A. Write and present a rap/song about Othello. (Students may do this in groups of no more than 3). This must be original work! I’ve seen all the internet versions! B. Draw a picture (on ½ of a poster board or a full poster board) of a scene from Othello. C. Build a three-dimensional model of the Globe Theatre. D. Choose a scene or a segment from a scene and act it out for the class (maximum 4 students)—Parts must be memorized. E. Memorize a minimum of 10 lines from the play ( a one character soliloquy) and present it to the class. F. Draw a map tracing the route Othello and the others probably took between Venice and Cyprus. (1/2 poster board) G. Casting Agent—Assign present day actors/actresses to play the roles of the characters in Othello. You should have pictures of each actor/actress and the part they are playing. (1/2 poster board) On the back of the poster explain why you chose each character for each particular part. H. Stage an interview with Iago from prison (60 minutes, 48 Hours, Dateline NBC, etc.)—2 students may work together on this. One student should be the interviewer and one play Iago. I. When people go to a stage production, they receive a program (playbill). Create a program for Othello that includes the following: a cover, an article about the historical background of the play, an act-by-act synopsis of the play, a list of characters and modern-day actors and actresses who would play each part, a brief article on how the production is being staged. J. Create a movie poster advertising a production of Othello. Include an illustration that will make people want to see the play or film. Also identify contemporary actors and actresses who might play the main roles in this production. K. Rewrite your favorite scene from the play in the type of English we use today. Present your contemporary version to the class. (Groups of no more than 4) Parts must be memorized. L. Present a panel discussion in which members of your class present their opinions about issues related to the play. Panelists should be able to support their opinions with evidence from the play. (Groups of no more than 4) The panel might consider one of the issues listed below: *Does Othello go insane? *What is Othello’s tragic flaw? *Why does Othello believe Iago? *What motivates Iago? Are Iago’s motivations important? *Why doesn’t Desdemona defend herself more effectively? M. Suppose that Othello were to be rewritten as a musical. Rewrite one of the speeches or dialogues as lyrics to a familiar song and perform it for the class. You will use the music from the current song and create lyrics from the play. (Groups of no more than 3) N. Comic Strip – create a comic strip for a scene from Othello. Your comic strip must be at least 10 frames long and include dialogue and color. The dialogue does not have to be word for word from the text; you can use more contemporary dialect, but the context should remain the same. O. Bulletin Board-This project will be assigned to one student with artistic abilities. I will work with this student to complete the board. This project must be completed earlier than the project due date. More information will be given in class.
