DISCOVER YOUR INNER ANIMAL

Throughout literature, animals, among other things, are used as symbols. In the Native American culture, animals are more than just symbols. They are instead a part of a person’s inner being. In many tribes, people are connected to a number of different animals. One animal, in particular, is the one that serves as a person’s guardian spirit. This is referred to as a “totem” animal.

For this project, you will take some time to analyze what animal is selected for you from the animal personality quiz that you completed. Did the quiz do a good job in picking this animal for you or not? Explain why you are or aren’t connected to this animal. You should give three reasons to explain yourself.

Once you determine which animal you are connected with, you are to write an essay explaining why you feel the way you do. The essay should be a minimum of 300 words. This should not be difficult. It is about you and, hopefully, that is a subject you know a lot about.

Please note – the following is an example of a horrendous essay.

The animal I am most like is an otter. The reason I am like an otter is because otters are playful. I am playful too. Otters also swim and have fun. I like to swim and have fun. Those are the reasons I am like an otter.

Ugh! How dreadful! Instead, expand upon these ideas. How are otters playful? What about you is playful? If you to like to swim, why? Where do you swim? Answer the questions that will give your reader insight into you as a person. Research your animal; show that you actually know enough about the animal to make a quality comparison. That will make for a more interesting and convincing essay. The reasons need to be supported by examples (evidence). Be specific!

Remember, good essays have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

The essay is due on ______. It is worth 20 points (writing rubric).
