GREAT BASIN COLLEGE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL May 11, 2010

PRESENT: Carl Diekhans, Mike McFarlane, Lynn Mahlberg, John Rice, Frank Daniels, Shirley Jones ABSENT: Sonja Sibert, Paulette Batayola

1. Approval of Minutes – The minutes of the President’s Council meeting on April 27, 2010, were approved.

2. SGA Update – Lynn reported on the SGA elections. They had 413 students vote service wide which is 11% of the student population. Paulette will be returning as president. Vice president is Jacqueline Lemback, secretary is Crystal Morgan, Elko Senators are Lindsay Nutting and Trevor Sneed, Ely senator is Theresa Pierce, Pahrump senator is Sara Bentz, and Winnemucca senator is Jessica Johnson. Students up for election in the fall are: Battle Mountain senator Terry Hardy, Elko senators Joe Bennett, Erica Netcher, Shay Pawelek, and Levi Price, Ely senator Janae Johnson, Pahrump senator Shannon Hadfield, and Winnemucca senator Kristi Berg. The SGA constitution was approved. The SGA has put on outstanding year end events with record attendance. They have done a great job all year.

3. Faculty Senate Update – Frank Daniels has enjoyed working with President’s Council. Carl thanked him for his attendance and serving as faculty senate chair and working with administration on critical issues this year.

 Guidelines for Search Committees – These guidelines passed Faculty Senate on March 19. Sonja Sibert was involved in the creation of the guidelines and approves them. The guidelines should be reviewed on a regular basis. President’s Council approved the content. The guidelines will be put into the official format and should be approved by President’s Council this summer  The only policy that is still out there lingering is the textbook policy.

4. Classified Council Update – Shirley Jones reported that the new classified officers for next year are: Jolina Adams and Delores Whittaker – co chairs; Renae Jim is vice chair, Carmen Matlock is secretary, and Gay Terras is treasurer. Carl thanked Shirley and Jolina for their participation on President’s Council this year. Shirley wanted to note for the record that the administrative assistants really appreciated the new online book ordering system for the faculty. It took a huge load off of classified.

5. Miscellaneous

 Lynn Mahlberg reported that GBC will have 346 graduates this year. There are receptions for the graduates scheduled for all the centers, as well as the nursing pinning and baccalaureate brunch. GBC will be having the midnight breakfast during finals again.

 Savannah Pederson is moving back to Arizona and has resigned. She will be missed.

 Mike McFarlane reported that Susanna Dorr will be available part time for web work. We will try to find someone to work with her to learn the ropes.

 Mike McFarlane reported that we will go forward this summer with backfilling some positions from the early retirements. We will backfill in the areas where we will have the most students.

 Carl Diekhans reported he will be in Ely on May 23 and 24 to attend the reception for the Ely graduates and to attend the memorial for Norm Goeringer. The Ely building was named after Norm as he was the main benefactor. A bronze bust of Norm will be put in the building. Norm was really excited about the honor of receiving the honorary baccalaureate degree from GBC. He was a true supporter of the college.
