THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF ARTS SCHOLARS VISIT TO GHENT & BRUGES 25th – 27th April 2018 Two nights / Three days £675 per person – based on two sharing a twin room (Single supplement £105)
Day 1 – 25 th April
○ Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras (c 8 a.m.) to Ghent via Brussels. Check into Hotel NH Gent Belfort https://www.nh-hotels.com/hotel/nh- gent-belfort. ○ After lunch (not included) visit Jan Van Eyck’s ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb at St Baafskathedraal’. ○ Walk around the city centre to view the exteriors of St Niklaaskerk, the Castle of the Counts and the 12th century canal-side guild houses on the Graslei. ○ Evening welcome reception, an evening lecture ‘The Northern Renaissance’ followed by dinner including wine at a local restaurant.
Day 2 – 26 th April: Full day in the exquisite medieval city of Bruges
○ Walk through the Beguinages to the Onthaalkerk Onze- Lieve-Vrouw to see Michelangelo’s statue of Madonna and Child featured in the Monuments Men. ○ Visit the Groeninge Museum, which has important works by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and Hugo van der Goes. ○ Walk to the Markt, Bruges’ main square with its 83m medieval tower, the Belfort we will pass the Stadhuis, the town hall built between 1376 and 1420, the exterior of the Heilig Bloed Basiliek, which reputedly holds drops of Christ’s blood, and the canalised River Raie. ○ After lunch (not included), visit SintJanshospital Museum, a 12th century hospital and chapel, with works by Hans Memling. ○ Evening lecture: ‘The Art of Ghent’ followed by dinner including wine at a local restaurant.
Day 3 – 27th April ○ Visit Ghent Museum of Fine Arts and see more Northern Renaissance works and paintings by Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and Anthony van Dyck, and important tapestries by Urbaan and Daniel Leyniers. ○ Lunch (not included) followed by a visit to the Ghent Design Museum. ○ Transfer to Ghent Station for the train back to Brussels and then onwards to St Pancras by Eurostar (arriving c. 7 p.m.). Administrative Arrangements
1. There are 25 places on this trip for Liverymen (plus one guest each if wished). If these places are not filled, the opportunity will be opened to Freemen.
2. Please respond to me using the attached form. I will then respond to the first 25 and send their details to Travel Editions who will send them Terms & Conditions and a booking form for completion. There will also be 6 Reserves (in order). Please N.B. that I will only be accepting completed forms (either by post or attached to an email) as a record of your intention to participate.
3. Cost:
a. The trip costs £675 a head, based on 2 people sharing. The single supplement is £105.
b. When the booking form is then sent out from Travel Editions, they will require a deposit of £200 per person (Credit Cards will receive a 1% charge).
c. Travel Editions will require proof of a travel insurance policy, failing this they offer insurance for the trip at £23 per person under 70 years of age or £53 over 70.
d. The price includes:
a.1) Return Eurostar/TGV trains, 2nd class a.2) Accommodation as specified, a.3) Welcome reception on Day 1, a.4) Breakfast daily & 2 dinners including wine at local restaurants, a.5) Two lectures, a.6) Full touring itinerary as detailed, a.7) Entrance fees, a.8) Accompanying lecturer Gerald Deslandes & tour manager.
e. The price does NOT include:
1) Meals & drinks not specified above, 2) Porterage & gratuities, 3) Travel insurance: 4) Single supplement: £105.00,
