Culminating Activity – The Portfolio

Task: Students will create a portfolio using criteria outlined below. It is to be completed in booklet or scrapbook form. The portfolio will be divided into six sections representing each of the religions/traditions studied in class. (Early Religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity).

Instructions: 1. The cover page for your portfolio must include 6 symbols for each of the six religions /traditions (must be hand drawn).

2. Students are to complete each assignment and compile them into separate sections for each religion as a creative booklet/scrapbook/portfolio.

3. Students must use proper MLA citations to cite resources used throughout portfolio. See examples and rubric given.

4. Select ONE assignment from each section. NOTE: If you are in an SHSM program you must select the appropriate SHSM option for you in each section (where available). If you are not in an SHSM all options are available to you.

Assignments: Early Religions (Due: ) o Briefly describe one Early Religious belief or practice that you feel might be essential to a balanced life in today’s society. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font) or o Choose one thing that you learned about the traditional culture of Early Civilizations that impressed you the most. Explain why. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font)

Hinduism (Due: ) o Dharma (duty) is a very important concept in Hinduism. Define dharma. In your opinion, what is the essential dharma of each of the following: teacher, parent, friend, police officer, and yourself? (1 page minimum, approximately a paragraph each, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font) or o Create a god/goddess - establish the origin (history), legend, purpose of the god/goddess and include a visual of your god/goddess. (approximately a paragraph each). Describe what his/her appearance represents. or o [Sport SHSM] Yoga as a form of exercise has been adopted by the Western world, but was originally based on the physical part of Raja Yoga. Explore the role of physical yoga as a form of self-discipline and meditation. Buddhism (Due: ) o [SoJust SHSM] In a written report, (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced,12 pt. font) present your view on what position you think Buddhists would take on the environmental and ecological issues of today for example (global warming, toxic spills), and explain your view. or o Some people call Buddhism atheistic because Buddhists do not believe in a god- creator of the universe. Buddhists are more inclined to say that Buddhism is non-theistic, that is, a god has no place in their belief system. Does this mean Buddhism is not a religion? Present your view in a letter to a religious newspaper. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced,12 pt. font) or o [Sport SHSM] Diet (i.e. vegetarianism) can be an important part of Buddhist monastic practice, but differs from sect to sect in Buddhism. Fasting, in particular, in the monastic community is considered an ascetic practice, a "dhutanga" practice. (Dhutanga means "to shake up" or "invigoration.") Dhutangas are a specific list of thirteen practices, four of which pertain to food. These practices are adopted by individuals voluntarily, they are not required in the normal course of a Buddhist monastic's life of practice. Write an explanation of a specific Buddhist sect’s dietary practices, a description of the four food related dhutanga practices and the health benefits/detriments Buddhist diet and dhutanga dietary practices can cause. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font)

Judaism (Due: ) o Which two of the Ten Commandments are the most difficult for you and/or society to follow? Explain why with specific examples. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font) or o [Sport SHSM] Your closest friend, who is Jewish, has invited you to attend and participate in a Jewish religious festival (Pesach, Hanukkah, or Yom Kippur / Rosh Hashanah) OR a Jewish milestone (Naming Ceremony, Bar / Bat Mitzvah, or Wedding). Write an article for the school newspaper (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font) on your observations. In your article, you should discuss the history, meaning, rituals and observances. Include a brief discussion of the foods and fasting that are associated with the various celebrations and how they are connected to their faith.  You may choose to include the recipe of one or more of the dishes discussed.  Be sure to observe the usual requirements of a newspaper article (title, by- line, article format.) Christianity (Due: ) o Using Jesus’ teachings of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5) choose two and apply it to the current world. What would Jesus approve of and disapprove of? With regards to morality and how we treat each other, “What would Jesus do?” (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font) or o [SoJust SHSM] Research a current issue (within the last year) related to a modern-day moral issue in which Christian beliefs may be in conflict with those of secular society (i.e. poverty, hunger, war, equality, environmentalism, human cloning / stem-cell research.) Find an example of these conflicts in a newspaper or in a magazine and include a copy of the article in your portfolio. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font)

Islam (Due: ) o [SoJust SHSM] Look for one recent newspaper or magazine article (within the current year) that deals with people of the Islamic faith. Write a brief (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced,12 pt. font) analysis of how the article reflects or does not reflect Muslim belief. Provide a copy of the article including the date. Be sure to include in your introduction the headline, date and source of the article or o Explore your personal reactions to Islam. List all the aspects that you find attractive about Islam. What teachings, beliefs or values in Islam do you admire? Then list the elements that are objectionable to you. Provide a reasoned and logical explanation of why you object to certain teachings. Recall any stories and news reports that you have seen on television about Muslims. How much of your own attitude toward Islam is based on what you have seen on television. Describe any changes in your view of Islam. (1 page minimum, typed, double spaced,12 pt. font)

Final Summary Report (Due: ) o This is to be included at the end of the portfolio. This report will be 1 page minimum, typed double spaced,12 pt. font and will include: o Your thoughts on what you learned using specific examples. o How this portfolio/course has changed your views on world religions.

2. Put creative touches in your project such as illustrations, maps, graphics, and photographs in all projects.

3. Though not explicitly an essay, each component of your portfolio should include an introduction, supporting proofs / evidence / examples and a conclusion.

4. All written components must be typed using 12-point font and double-spaced.

5. Plagiarized papers will receive a mark of “0”. It is up to the student to provide the teacher with a copy of all works consulted if the teacher requests these of the students.

6. The proper use of English and correct style for writing formal writing assignments will be evaluated and will constitute a part of your final grade. If you have questions or concerns, consult your teacher.

ABSOLUTELY NO LATES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE THIRD CLASS FOLLOWING THE DUE DATE. THIS IS WORTH 30% OF YOUR FINAL MARK.
