LUBBOCK ROTARY CLUB MEETING REPORT
July 20, 2005
On Wednesday, July 20, 2005, the Rotary Club of Lubbock met at the McInturff Center, with President Jim Carpenter presiding. After calling the meeting to order, President Carpenter asked the club members to show their appreciation for our substitute pianist, Jan Sessum, and then called on Davis Armistead to lead the club’s invocation. John Leonard came next to lead the members in singing our National Anthem and in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Don McCullough introduced the following visiting Rotarians – Angeles Baranda (Lubbock Metro), Byron Edwards (Lubbock Metro), and Kevin McGinnis (Lubbock Southwest) – and then called upon the following club members to introduce their guests: Keith Larremore – Matt Sefcik … Marcy Jarrett – Katie Hamilton … Dudley Faver – John Bethune … Jan The Rotary Club of Lubbock 1603 W. Next, President Bell called David Cobb to bring us a “Rotary Minute,” in which he spoke of the history and current status of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio (the Polio Plus program) for which $600 million has been contributed by Rotarians. Dudley Faver then stepped up to induct the newest member of our club – Dr. Kathy Stalcup, the Managing Director of Technology Support, Information Technology Division, Texas Tech University. Welcome to the club, Kathy! Then, President Carpenter made the following announcements: A “permanent” club membership badge was presented to John Leonard. Club members were reminded to pick up the new 2005-06 committee lists and membership rosters that are now available. Norman Igo remains in Covenant Hospital, Room 365-E, while recovering from a broken hip. Thursday, July 21st was the last day on which club members could have their photos taken at K. Porter Photography for the on-line membership directory. (Note: If you missed this last chance, you may still submit a photo – if you do it quickly – by emailing it as a ‘.jpg’ attachment to Marjan.) Monte Monroe then introduced our program for the day – Andy Swift, Ph.D. Dr. Swift is a Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Wind Science & Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University and has worked in wind engineering for over 25 years. Dr. Swift spoke of the history and current status of wind power as an energy source. He noted that wind power is the fastest growing source of energy in the world, with a growth rate of 30% per year. Wind power supplies only 1-2% of the electrical supply in the United States, but much more in other countries. In our country, wind-powered water pumps (i.e., windmills) were instrumental in opening up the American West to development by making a scarce resource, water, readily available. Modern wind turbines – often configured in wind farms – generate electrical power rather than pump underground water to the surface. In Texas alone, the GE Company produces over 200 megawatts of electricity per year. Each wind turbine produces 1.5 megawatts using 3 blades per turbine, each about the size of the wing of a 747 jetliner. The cost to install one wind turbine is about $1.5 million, with the average rate of return on investment running at about 12%. The cost of producing energy from wind power is steadily decreasing, making production more cost efficient and profitable. Wind power also is a reliable and clean source of energy. The biggest challenge at the moment is how to move the power generated by wind turbines from usually remote locations to high use areas such as large metropolitan areas. Following Dr. Swift’s remarks, President Carpenter “rang the bell” to adjourn the meeting. by Ben Lock, Rotary Eye editor
