For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 95 O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts. Come, let us ring out our joy to the Lord; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come into his presence, giving thanks; let us hail him with a song of praise. O come; let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us, for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice! “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert when your forebears put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work.” O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! The word of the Lord abides for ever; that word is the good news which was preached to you. Alleluia! Communion Antiphon The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him. PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH Almighty God, by the outpouring of Your Grace make the Year of Faith a time of renewed commitment for us; a time for us to turn back to You with loving hearts, a time to embrace, once again, the faith handed on to us by the Apostles and taught by Your one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

May this Year of Faith renew us in the mission which Your Son Jesus handed on to us to proclaim the Gospel Message and so lead others to You. May this year be a time that strengthens our relationship with You, deepens our friendship with Your Son, Jesus Christ, and fills us with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. May we grow strong in faith, increase in hope and live Your Holy Gospel with love. We ask all this through Christ Our Lord. Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C 06th October 2013 Columba McCann, OSB Commentary First Reading (Hab 1:2-3; 2:2-4). This reading reflects a time of distress and difficulty in which the prophet’s society was oppressed externally by foreign rule and internally by personal greed. The prophet is not afraid to ask serious questions about God’s role in the oppression of his people. In the style of a lament, the opening verses cry out about injustice and oppression. It seems that God does not care or does not listen. The answer, which comes from chapter 2, is a call to steadfast fidelity. The prophet looks to the future for the unfolding of God’s plan, in which faith will receive its reward. This call to perseverance in faith connects with the Gospel focus on the power and the nature of faith. The last stanza of the responsorial psalm also makes a connection with the testing of faith which happened when the people wandered in the desert on their Exodus journey, often on the brink of starvation or dehydration. Second Reading (2 Tim 1:6-8, 13-14) The author calls for fidelity to the Gospel preached by Paul. The laying on of hands mentioned in the opening verse need not necessarily refer to an ordination rite in the modern sense; at the time it was a sign of election for mission through the power of the Spirit. It also expresses the dependence on Paul for what has been received. The hardships and sufferings of Paul can be taken as a source of strength and good example, though the real source of strength is the power of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Christian leader has been given the gift of virtuous teaching and living, and must guard and develop what has been received. This message is valid not just for pastors but for believers in general. The emphasis on faithful endurance makes for a link with the theme of the first reading, though this is more by coincidence than by any design on the part of the compilers of the lectionary. Gospel (Lk 17:10-19) The issue of faith is again at the centre of the Gospel passage. Jesus teaches that even a small amount of faith (small as a mustard seed) is enough to work wonders. What was the issue that was testing the faith of the apostles? We do not know, but the immediate context in Luke suggests an answer: Jesus has just spoken about the inevitability of scandals and the need for constant forgiveness within the community. A test of faith indeed! In a saying that is unique to Luke, the images that follow throw light on the nature of faith: it is obedient, like the servant who follows orders; it is laborious and persevering, like ploughing or minding sheep; it is humble, not calling attention to any personal feats nor seeking to move upwardly from the status of servant.
