A. Musical Opportunities to learn 1. Keeping the beat to the music by bouncing in their “popcorn” position while waiting for their letter. 2. Dancing to the rhythm of the music on the CD 3. By reading the story out loud many times the children will learn the rhythmic flow of the book. B. General Opportunities to learn 1. Students learn to practice self control and patience by waiting in their popcorn position for their letter to be called. 2. Students practice self control by sitting in a circle waiting their turn to stick their letters to the tree C. Curriculum 1. Phonics lessons are reinforced while students wait for their letter in the song, the first few times doing this lesson sound out each students name with them. Ex. “La La- Lamannii” To show him that his name starts with L which has the sound of “La” 2. Letter recognition is practiced by having students match lower case letters with their corresponding upper case letter on the coconut tree. D. Activities

1. Play Chicka Chicka Boom Boom CD track 4, kids bend down ready to pop like popcorn and dance when they hear the letter their name begins with in the song.

Ex. ABC up the coconut tree, Amelia, Anthony and Cameron pop up and dance.

2. Set up coconut tree prop, and put a mix of upper and lower case felt letters on the tree. Pass out letters to each student and have them sit in a circle. Each student will have a turn to go in the middle of the circle and stick their letter next to the corresponding upper or lower case letter on the tree. Musical CD for chicka chicka boom boom may be played during this activity; children can practice keeping a beat by clapping when they are waiting for their turn to go in the middle. 3. Read the story out loud and have students join in on the repeating words BOOM BOOM. Students can use loud deep voices for these words. Students can also join in on the “OHHHH NO”

4. Pass out rain sticks or egg shakers to half the class and drums or tambourines to the other half. Read the story out loud, the rain sticks and shakers will make noises for the Chicka Chicka and the drums and tambourines will be the BOOM BOOM.
