Dear Student

The Staff would like to welcome you to the GP Unit at Blairgowrie Community Hospital. We hope that your learning experience here is valuable and enjoyable.

Your placement time will be very varied and include opportunities to observe from, and practice with a number of members of the multi agency and multi professional teams.

Please note the following important points:

 Normally, off duty is available approximately 4 weeks in advance and off duty requests can be made to the Senior Charge Nurse.

 Students are generally asked to work the normal shift pattern ie 7.30am – 3.30pm and 1.30pm – 9.30pm or we can accommodate around bus times. The off duty is set out to enable you to work with your mentor as much as possible. During some shifts your learning will be supervised by an associate mentor and/or other members of the team.

 On your first day please arrive on the ward at 9.00am and ask for the Nurse in Charge.

 Full uniform should always be worn, changing facilities are available and a locker will be allocated. For health and safety reasons, we recommend wearing comfortable regulation shoes, long hair should be neatly tied back and the only permitted jewellery is a wedding band and a pair of small stud earrings.

 If you are travelling by car there is usually parking space in the hospital car park. Presently there is no charge for this.

 If you are travelling by bus, please enquire at the Travel Office in Dundee, Tel. No. 01382 228345 for bus times which will fit in with shift patterns.

 If you wish, you can bring your own food (microwave available). Staff canteen facilities are limited and food requires to be ordered in advance. There are also a few food outlets within walking distance of the hospital.

 Finally, please remember to bring your CAP booklet on your first day. If your previous mentor still has the booklet, please remind him/her it will be required at the beginning of this placement in order that your learning contract can be discussed.

We look forward to meeting with you, but if you require any further information prior to your placement, please contact Charge Nurse Valerie McIntyre, Ward Assistant Sheena Fotheringham or myself.

Yours sincerely

Sheena O'Brien Senior Charge Nurse
