Setting Conventions for the Final Honour Schools of Oriental Studies 2017:
SPOKEN PERSIAN
Saturday, 22 April 2017
Venue: Oriental Institute, Pusey Lane
Candidates must not have in their possession any books or materials relating to Persian language, except where stated below. Candidates are required to wear sub fusc.
The ‘Spoken Persian’ component of FHS is weighted as half a paper. It consists of the following parts:
(i) Listening comprehension (40 marks) Candidates will be presented with a list of questions, in English, relating to the content of the texts that they are about to hear. They will be allowed five minutes to study these questions. Candidates will then be required to listen to two passages of modern Persian, each lasting for approximately four to five minutes, which will be read to them twice, at normal speed. There will be a gap of five minutes after the first reading or playing of each text and a gap of seven minutes after the second reading of each text. Candidates will be required to provide written answers in English to the questions. (Approximate duration 35 minutes.)
(ii) Reading in Persian and conversation (60 marks), conducted as an individual exam for each candidate in turn, and comprising: (a) Reading in Persian: candidates will be given a passage of unvowelled modern Persian prose. They will be given three minutes to read this to themselves and prepare, after which they will be asked to read it aloud to the examiners. (Approximate duration 10 minutes.) (20 marks)
(b) Conversation: each candidate will be required to discuss with the examiner a topic chosen by the candidate from a list of three announced two hours before the start of the examination. (Approximate duration 15 fifteen minutes.) No notes are to be taken into the examination (40 marks)
When they have finished this part of the examination, candidates must leave the vicinity of the examination. Schedule Saturday 22 April 2017
