Department Updates

o Career Pathways – Richard Gonzalez: (not present) 1) Dual enrollment with high schools: due to a number of technical errors, we are still working with admissions on cleaning up grades for students from Spring 2015. Admissions has hired a person to just work on dual enrollment which has been quite helpful. 2) The Career Advancement Academy (CAA): We have two cohorts at ECC, Welding and ACR (Air Conditioning Repair), and two at Compton, MTT (Machine Tool Technology) and ACR. We are busy recruiting. Welding looks like it will be full but ACR is proving difficult to recruit for. Shanta Pittman is doing the recruitment at Compton. 3) AMETLL: We just finished year one of the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology Linked Learning consortium, a five college California Career Pathways Trust grant. We are going strong into year two. We are increasing the number of high schools we do dual enrollment with by adding El Segundo High, North Torrance High and South Torrance High. The first week in August we will be co-hosting, with the South Bay WIB, a Work Based Learning Summer Institute to help the high school and college instructors integrate authentic work based learnings into their classrooms. 4) STEM/CTE (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics/Career Technical Education) Teacher Pipeline: We are continuing to have workshops on how students can earn a teaching credential in STEM fields, as well as hire students to work as teaching assistants in STEM classrooms both at ECC and area high schools. We are also helping to organize a regional conference at Cerritos College for similar programs in the area. 5) CTE Transitions: In the process of sending out hundreds of postcards to ECC students who went to high schools where we have articulation agreements for Engineering Technology to explain how they can earn articulated credit. 6) SB 1070 subgrant from Rio Hondo: Working on two new mini ETEC certificates that stack into larger certificates. 7) LAUSD Career Pathway Trust: Working with LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) schools to support them in dual enrollment with their partner colleges.

o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Tracy Traina: 1) Our Mentor Protégé is entering year 3 of a three-year contract. We are currently closing out year 2. 2) Certification Training: We have a CQE class starting in September for Northrup Grumman on site in Palmdale. 3) Classes: The Summer Aerospace Fastener Machine Tool class at Compton is underway with a full class. Today we held a Job Fair at Compton for the summer and current students. There were over 10 employers looking to hire entry-level students. 4) H1-B Grant: We requested an extension on the grant for another 6 months so we can continue to train individuals looking for jobs in manufacturing. We just finished our 6th 2-week Soldering class. We are now offering a 2-week IPC Certification to previous students. This will help them acquire faster employment at a higher salary. 5) Certification Training: We have a Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) class in September and a Quality Engineer (CQE) class in November. Both classes are paid through a Federal grant. 6) Regional Advisory Meeting: In the planning stages of hosting Regional Advisory Meetings for Manufacturing in January. One will be held in our area and one will be held up north. 7) We will be working with Glendale College to put together a Machine Tool cohort for autistic adults 18 years and older. Still looking for funding.

o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: (not in attendance):

o Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital 1) Employment Training Panel (ETP) Activities: Eldon Davidson is traveling to Sacramento in August to formally present our application for the Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program 2016-2018 Contract at the August 28 Panel meeting. 2) ET14-0800 AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology: Program ($375,000) – Term August 5, 2013-August 4, 2015: Attendance Reports have been issued by Diane Palmer to our training partners. Cerritos CCD, City College of San Francisco, and Long Beach CCD are submitting final invoices. 3) ET15-0804 (Supplemental) AB118 alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program ($64,640) – Term: January 1, 2015-December 31, 2016: Training is currently taking place through our training partners (Cerritos CCD, City College of San Francisco and Long Beach CCD). 4) ET14-0217 Two-Year Core Contract ($1,260,645) – Term: November 25, 2013 – November 25, 2015: Training continues to be provided to our clients as well as through our training partners. 5) ET15-0427 – New Two Year Core Contract ($649,350) – Term: May 4, 2015 – May 3, 2017. Our training partners (Cerritos CCD and Saddleback College) are offering training to their clients. We are also providing training to Lisi Aerospace. Eldon Davidson is conducting many industry visits in an effort to attract more businesses. 6) Contract Education Training: King’s Hawaiian was extremely pleased with our Microsoft Office Excel, Outlook and Word training recently. They will resume training in September. City of Torrance continues with DDI Aspiring Supervisor Track training through late August. .

o Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson: 1) Grant proposal(s) in progress and/or planned: We will be submitting a proposal for the continuation of the S-Stem grant from NSF (National Science Foundation). The program seeks to increase the success of low-income, academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The program provides awards to fund scholarships, and to enhance and study effective curricular and co-curricular activities that support recruitment, retention, student success, and graduation in STEM. This competition is different than our last awarded because it requires 60% scholarships and 40% support services expense breakdown. NSF Alliance for Innovation administered by Foundation for Community Colleges sets up partnerships between businesses with NSF funded research projects with community colleges. Campus is looking to link the Project Lead the Way, Engineering Technology program. Keck conference call was not positive. We are back to the planning stage and looking for funder(s). Still in progress: Foster youth, Feline program. 2) Grant Proposals Not Awarded: TRIO – Student Support Services did not score high enough to be funded. We are going over the reviewers’ comments. 3) Grants Awarded: Prop 39 funds coming through LA Trade Tech for Industry and Technology Department. These funds support equipment and curriculum design and are in the $100 - $150,000 range per year. Nursing Assessment Remediation and Retention continuation grant for $171,000. MESA funded for 15/16 for $50,500. 4) General Update(s): Bobby will be presenting a FLEX day activity with Theresa Palos and Jeffrey Cohen. Jenny attended a week-long training at the Grantsmanship Center in Los Angeles. It was an informative course and we will be incorporating many of the tools and lists into the Grants Office manual and webpage.

o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:

2 1) The SBDC participated in the LAX Coastal Chamber’s annual Chamberfest event on June 25th. The event spotlighted various vendors/service agencies from the South Bay and was attended by 300+ participants. 2) Our client, It’s a Deal, received a certificate of recognition from Assembly Member David Haley’s office. This was in addition to receiving an award from the LA Mayor’s office as part of the Small Business Week in May. The SBDC nominated It’s a Deal for the awards because they began on a shoestring and have steadily grown the business over the past couple of years. They now employ over 100 casino dealers who work at parties throughout the South Bay. 3) The SBDC is hosting a workshop in conjunction with the City of Inglewood on July 29 on how to do business in the city. The free event will feature speakers from the city, the chamber and the SBDC and will be held at the Community Room in City Hall from 6:30-8:30pm. 4) The SBDC is participating in the Board of Equalization’s small business workshop on August 6th. We are speaking on market research for small business. The SBDC will have a center audit on August 10th. The Lead Center will review SBDC records and client files to ensure the center is in compliance with SBA regulations. 5) Some of the workshops that the SBDC will be offering in August are Small Business Orientation – August 11th, Business Loans 101 – August 11, Marketing 101 – August 13th, The Basics of Starting a Business – August 18th, Business Licenses, Corporations & LLCs – August 20th, Small Business Orientation – August 25th, How to Estimate Start-up Costs & Cash Flow – August 25th, How to Use Periscope the New Live Chat/Live – August 26th, and Import Workshop – August 27th.

o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Terminal Island: Denise and I attended Quarterly Community Relations Board Meeting. Job Fair: Will be held in August. Denise will present classroom prep for interviews. This year Terminal Island wants employers to interview. Can anyone suggest employers that would hire ex- felons? There is a $7,500 bonus to the employer who does. Welding: Contract has been extended another 420 hours and will complete by 9/30/15. New 5-yr Welding contract 10/1/15-9/30/20 is out for bid. Parenting: 5-Year contract – Began 2/10/15 - Instructor Bobbie Lanham. Sessions 1 & 2 completed; Session 3 begun July 7th and Session 4 to begin August 11th. 2) Metropolitan Detention Center: Parenting 5-Year contract began 3/25/15 – Instructor – Theresa Reed. On-going. MDC is looking for educational opportunities for soon to be released inmates. 3) Maritime Training - STCW-95: STCW (Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping), Lifeboat, and Security Awareness to be held monthly. Advanced Fire scheduled for week of August 3, 2015 was cancelled.. Tankerman: Instructor, Johnathan Brainard. Class held week of July 20, 2015. VPDSD (Security Awareness) held July 27, 2015. Medical Provider removed from schedule. Vessel Security Officer (VSO): Need to submit changes for approval. 3-Day STCW Refresher to be available before year-end. Effective Feb 1, 2013 all workers who tend to off-shore rigs must have fire training. Effective Jan 12, 2014 all seafarers must have Security Duties certification. 4) Retail, Hospitality, Tourism Grant (RHT): Retreat will be held September 17-18, 2015 at Tenaya Lodge in Yosemite.

Discussion a) Presidential Search: The posting ended July 31st. It’s going to be a soft close. That means that they will continue to accept applications. The committee will convene August 13th to look at the applicants. They will select candidates. Those top candidates will then go to the Board of Trustees and also forums. They are going to hold forums on campus in September so that you can listen to the 3 candidates and ask questions of them. The final decision will come from the Board. The new president will be named in October. Our current president’s last day is in February 2016. b) Storage Room Clean-Up: We’re finishing up the storage room clean-up. The final clean-out should be completed by mid-August. c) Picnic: The annual picnic has been cancelled for this year.
