Career Summary
June 2016 to Current Program Director- Pre-requisites for Health Professions
Doane University, Crete, Nebraska
I have recently transitioned from clinical practice to academia. In my current position, I am directing an online program of pre-requisites for those post-baccalaureates entering the various health professions. As part of that program, I have developed a course titled “Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine”. The next step is develop a Master’s Degree Program in Human and Planetary Health with an Institute of the same name. November 2006 to August 2016 Physician, Beatrice Community Hospital
After obtaining my Medical Degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, I trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology for one year at UNMC but completed my residency training at the University of California Irvine. I stayed there for one year of fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. I am currently Board Certified in both and practicing both disciplines currently in Beatrice. I am also currently the Chair of the Physician Governing Board, Chair of the Peer Review Committee and Director of Lifestyle Medicine but will be stepping down from those positions once my transition is completed at the beginning of August.
Professional Development
Over the preceding 7 years, I have developed a passion for Lifestyle Medicine. In this discipline of medicine, the imperative is on the recognition that 80% of all chronic disease is the result of lifestyle behaviors and, as such, working to change lifestyle behaviors to treat the cause. There is an enormous body of literature that supports this notion. I have spent most of the last 7 years studying the literature, taking courses to improve my knowledge on the subject, lecturing on the topic and treating patients with Lifestyle Medicine. I have also had a paper published on the topic in the peer reviewed, American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. The American College of Lifestyle Medicine has had annual conferences for the last 5 years and I have been on the planning committee for the organization for the last 3. I was planning chair for both 2015 and 2016.
I also hold a CPE (Certified Physician Executive) which was granted to me by the American Association for Physician Leaders after 150 hours of coursework and a Capstone Project Presentation. This has given me specific financial and economic education.
Education
My undergraduate education was in Biology at Doane College in Crete, NE. I was accepted into medical school after only 3 years of undergraduate study by the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.
