Building a Team – Working Together

MEMO TO: Parents/Guardians FROM: Gerald Morgan, Principal & Jill Benoit, Vice-Principal DATE: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 RE: Breakfast Program Fundraiser

“Pennies for Breakfast”

Beginning tomorrow, Thursday, February 21, we will begin a fundraiser to assist with the cost of our Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program. Each morning we have approximately 175 children that visit our breakfast program to socialize and have breakfast. It is a great start to their day.

Recently, pennies went out of circulation. We realize that many of you have pennies sitting at home that would really benefit the students in our school through the Breakfast Program. If you would like to donate these pennies to our Breakfast Program, please send them along to the school during the next two weeks. Each classroom will have a bucket to collect the pennies.

Remember that the Kids Eat Smart Foundation will match every penny that we raise. The funds that we raise will be doubled!!! This also applies to any donations made to the program throughout the school year.

We greatly appreciate your support!!! Stephenville Primary School 72 West Street, P.O. 1. EARLY SCHOOL CLOSURE Please note that school will close at 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, February 6th. Morning Kindergarten students will be dismissed at the regular time, 11:45 a.m. There will be no classes for afternoon Kindergarten students. School staff will be involved in School Development activities during the afternoon session.

2. JANEWAY DAY 2013 Valentine’s Day has traditionally been set aside as “Janeway Day” in schools across Newfoundland and Labrador. Each year thousands of dollars are raised to fund the purchase of medical equipment for the children’s hospital. This year, we will celebrate Janeway Day on Thursday, February 14. Children and their parents/guardians can send a donation along to the school if they wish to do so.

3. ABSENTEES When students are absent from school we ask that parents/guardians call the school between 8:30 – 9:00 to let us know their child is out. If you have access to e-mail, please feel free to e-mail the secretary at [email protected]. The note will be passed on to the teacher. If we have not received a message by 9:00, we will make contact with the home to determine the reason for the absence. For parents/guardians of afternoon Kindergarten students, please contact the school by 12:45 p.m.

Building a Team – Working Together MEMO TO: Parents/Guardians FROM: Gerald Morgan (Principal) & Jill Benoit (Vice-Principal) DATE: January 21, 2013 RE: SAFETY MEMO

1. SCHOOL SAFETY INITIATIVE – SECURED MAIN ENTRANCE: We are pleased to inform you that the security system for our Main Entrance which we have been working on for the past several months is now complete. We have installed a 24 hour video surveillance camera in our main entrance foyer along with an intercom system through which visitors to our school can communicate with the main office. Access to the building will be restricted throughout the school day. We ask that all parents/guardians make note of the following:

 ALL VISITORS including parents/guardians will have to use the intercom at the Main Entrance to identify themselves before being given access to the school.  Parents/Guardians are asked to contact the school by phone if a visit is necessary.  The Main Entrance will be unlocked at 8:15 a.m., and will be locked again at 8:40 a.m., once all students have entered the building.  The Main Entrance will remain locked until 2:30 p.m., at which time we will prepare for dismissal.  ALL OTHER ENTRANCES in the building will be locked all day long.

2. REMINDERS ABOUT OUR SCHOOL DAY 8:15 a.m. The school doors are unlocked at 8:15 a.m. Please do not drop students off before this time, 8:40 a.m. School Day Begins (Students should be here by 8:35 a.m.) 10:20-10:35 Recess 11:45-12:30 Lunch 2:40 p.m. Dismissal

Parents/Guardians who pick up their children at dismissal time are asked NOT to enter the school waiting area until 2:30 p.m. to prevent congestion in the main entrance area while students move from class to class.

3. PARKING LOT SAFETY REMINDERS Please make note of the following relating to our parking lot and the drop-off and thoroughfare lanes at the front of our building. To assist in keeping our children safe, we ask you to make special note of the following:

 The traffic lane closest to the school is NOT to be used for parking. This lane is to be used for drop-off and through traffic only. Vehicles should not be stopped for any period of time other than the time required to drop off students.  Even though the lane closest to the school is very wide, there should only be ONE lane of traffic. Vehicles should not be stopped while other vehicles pull out and pass them. We have pylons in place to assist with this.  The center lane is for buses and through traffic only. Drop-off and parking are NOT permitted in this lane. This will reduce the likelihood of children walking in front of moving vehicles.  Children can be dropped off in the lane nearest the school or in the parking lot near the crosswalk. Children must use the crosswalk and NOT walk through the moving vehicles.  Parents/guardians entering the school or stopping their vehicles for extended periods of time must park in either of the following locations:  On the school parking lot.  In the empty lot next to the school (where the ESSO tanks were once located) or near that location.  On the Elementary School Parking lot.  NOT IN THE TRAFFIC LANES.

The SAFETY of our students MUST come first. The inconvenience of parking a short distance from the school will pay off if we can ensure the safety of each of our students.
