Basic Bibliography

Basic bibliography: Recent articles: Kristin Norget, “The Politics of Liberation: The Popular Church, Indigenous Theology, and Grassroots Mobilization in Oaxaca, Mexico,” Latin American Perspectives, vol. 24, no. 5 (Sep., 1997), 96-127.

W. E. Hewitt, “From Defenders of the People to Defenders of the Faith: A 1984-1993 Retrospective of CEB Activity in Sao Paolo,” Latin American Perspectives, vol. 25, no. 1, (Jan., 1998), 170-191.

Jefrey Gamarra, “Conflict, Post-Conflict and Religion: Andean Responses to New Religious Movements,” Journal of Southern African Studies, vol. 26, no. 2, (Jun., 2000), 271-287.

Manuel A. Vasquez, “Toward a New Agenda for the Study of Religion in the Americas,” Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs, vol. 41, no. 4, (Winter, 1999), 1-20. This whole issue has useful articles. Two older articles that provide great background: Daniel H. Levine, “Religion and Politics, Politics and Religion: An Introduction,” Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs, vol. 21, no. 1, (Feb. 1979), 5-29. This article is part of the special issue: “The Church and Politics in Latin America.”

Manzar Foroohar, “Liberation Theology: The Response of Latin American Catholics to Socioeconomic Problems,” Latin American Perspectives, vol. 13, no. 3, (Summer, 1986), 37-58. This article is part of the issue: “Religion, Resistance, Revolution.”

A few books: Virginia Garrard-Burnett, ed., On Earth as It Is in Heaven: Religion in Modern Latin America (Wilmington, DE: SR Books, 2000). Not all of the articles in this book deal with religion and politics, but those that do are very good.

Gustavo Gutierrez, A Theology of Liberation, Caridad Inda and John Eagleson, trans. and eds. (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 1973).

Lawrence Weschler: A Miracle, A Universe: Settling Accounts with Torturers (New York: Random House, 1990). Highly recommended. Religious involvement is not necessarily the central focus, but is treated.
