DESCRIPTION: An activity course designed to introduce the concepts involved in weight training in order to promote a healthier lifestyle.

RATIONALE: A course designed to provide a knowledge and skill base for developing and maintaining a lifestyle conductive to the improvement of physical fitness, through the use of safe and effective strength training.

GOALS: The students will be able to: 1. Utilize proper techniques and strategies to enhance their body’s performance. 2. Identify the theories involved in strength training. 3. Identify the principles for safe and effective strength gains. 4. Perform activities designed to enhance strength and fitness.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Demonstrate acceptable levels of knowledge of the various strength training methods. a. Performance Indicator: Students will demonstrate knowledge through written tests. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of assessment methods for various strength factors. a. Performance Indicator: Students will assess their own level of strength on a variety of lifts. 3. Demonstrate the ability to prescribe positive strength training behaviors for themselves and others. a. Performance Indicator: Students will develop a program of improvement or maintenance of strength. b. Performance Indicator: Students will prescribe strength improvement steps on written assignments/tests.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to: 1. Dress out every day in appropriate clothing. a. Appropriate clothing: tennis shoes (must tie), socks, t-shirt (w/ school appropriate logo and coverage), shorts/sweats/pants (meet length requirement w/ appropriate logo). b. Approximately 5 minutes is given at the beginning of class to dress out; 10 minutes is given to dress back in and shower. 2. Follow directions and expectations in locker room and classroom. Dress in a timely manner and use appropriate behavior at all times. Lockers: a. Lockers will be given out during the first week of school. b. Lockers are to be used to store gym clothes and accessories only. c. A lock will be provided by the P.E. department and the school issued lock must be the only lock used. The students are responsible for keeping this lock on at all times. If it is lost, a fee of $5 will be assessed. d. DO NOT BRING LARGE SUMS OF MONEY, VALUABLE JEWELRY, OR ELECTRONICS TO THE LOCKER ROOM!! 3. Try to the best of their ability to complete assigned work. 4. Be understanding of differences of ability and performance level and work well with all of your classmates. a. Respect for teacher, classmates, and self is required. b. Students will be introduced to new lifts, games, skills, exercises and activities. Everyone is on different levels. Bullying and humiliation, abuse or harassment will NOT be tolerated!! c. Students must show good character and act appropriately at all times to receive full credit. 5. Make good use of the time and opportunity provided for them. 6. Enjoy the benefits of hard work.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Class Attendance and Participation: 1. Students are required to attend ALL classes and be prepared to participate in class activities and discussions. Students are expected to participate during the entire class period. i. Students who put forth the effort will develop the skills needed to do well in class. ii. Class periods consist of warm up activities, stretching, agilities, jogging,warm up lifts, core lifts, auxiliary lifts, body weight activities, and the occasional game play. Students are required to participate in all to receive full credit. 2. Students who do not dress out will not receive points. 1. Daily points: 10 points are earned every day; tougher workouts may be awarded 20 or more points. - Students must be present and meet all expectations to earn points for the day.  Absent: See “Make up Work” below 3. All “medical” no dresses must be accompanied by a doctor’s note with specific time periods and expectations. 4. If absent the students must complete make up work to earn back points. The first excused absence of every quarter is a “free day”. After that classes will need to be made up with an appropriate make up. 1. Tests and Skills tests: Students who are absent the day of the test. - The student must make an appointment with the teacher to make up the missed test. (Before school, after school, or during seminar). 2. Daily Points: Students who are absent for daily activities. - The student has the option of making up the daily points (unless prohibited by the principal or district) with a paper make up, physical make up, or free day. Paper: Two page hand written paper over any sport or physical activity or any related article review. It can, but does not have to be researched. Physical make up: The student must make an appointment with teacher outside of class time and complete either a 7 minute jog or 15 minute walk. Free day: One free day will be given per quarter to use for absences. These will not carry over from quarter to quarter. 5. Students who do not participate will walk while the class lifts.

EXAMS AND QUIZZES: 1. Scheduled exams will occur at the midterm and at the semester and will be a percentage of the total grade determined by the high school’s policy. 2. Quizzes and assigned readings may also take place throughout the semester.
