WELSH ATHLETICS MOUNTAIN RUNNING COMMITTEE MEETING CYFARFOD PWYLLGOR RHEDEG MYNYDD ATHLETAU CYMRU

DYDD GWENER/FRIDAY 2 RHAGFYR/DECEMBER 2016 at 7:00pm PLAS MENAI WATERSPORTS CENTRE LL55 1UE MEETING MINUTES

1. APOLOGIES: Steve Livett. Mike Blake & Delyth Brown 2. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dic Evans (DE). Paul Jenkinson (PJ). Arwel Lewis (AL) and Skype to John Chidlow. 3. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING: The previous meeting was after the British & Irish Junior Trial race at Llanberis Fire Station and was for selection purposes only. 4. MATTERS ARRISING FROM THE MINUTES: None 5. 2016 INTERNATIONAL & BRITISH REVIEW: (AL) Overall, our junior athletes were again very prominent earning 5 GB team selections with Bronwen Jenkinson the most outstanding athlete earning a World Championships Bronze medal. (GB’s only medal of any sorts at the event!) Bronwen also won the B&I Junior U/19 championships at Keswick with Heidi winning Bronze. Heidi also had an outstanding run in the European Championships at Arco, Italy where she again won Bronze, just one second from silver as she led the GB junior women to Team Gold. Andy Davies was our only senior GB representative with selection for the World Long Distance Championships at Podbrdo, Slovenia where Andy finished 9th overall as GB won Team Silver behind Italy. Ciaran Lewis represented GB’s junior men at both the European and World Championships 6. BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016: (Bronwen Jenkinson was Wales’s only notable performer winning the female under 23 title). North Wales men’s team finished 2nd in the Inter-Counties Championships at Llanberis (Moel Eilio) while North Wales women’s team finished 4th. 7. WELSH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016: (Tim Davies – Mercia & Hayley Evans - Buckley) were the overall male/female champions. North Wales won the Male & Female Inter-Regional Championships at Moel Eilio. 8. INTERNATIONAL EVENTS 2017: World Youth Cup for junior athletes born in the years 2000 & 2001 will be at Gagliano del Capo, Italy and the trial race will be incorporated into (DE) event (Red Kite Challenge) on Saturday 29 th April. The GB trial for the World Long Distance Championships (Premana, Italy) will be incorporated into the Yorkshire Three Peaks Race on Saturday 29th April. (Entries open at 8am on Saturday 4th February). The GB European trial races will be held at Keswick on the weekend of 3rd/4th June (Uphill Only). Having failed to send athletes to compete at the Smarna Gora event in recent years, (PJ) having previously competed in the event is to take the lead and ensure that we are represented in 2017. The Trofeo Vanoni event celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2017 and should attract even more quality athletes to the event, while we have in the past selected our athletes for the event from their performances at the Snowdon Race, in 2017, our strongest possible available teams will be selected (3 men & 2 women). 9. BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017: (AL) it was expected that Northern Ireland would be organising a Medium distance race in 2017 but it transpired that they had opted for a short distance event! We (Wales) had initially chosen the Elidir Fawr (Short race) for 2017 but to keep the same format for British Championships events of four races with one short, two medium and one long distance events, we have opted for the Maesgwm Muddle (medium) event in Llanberis to keep the status quo. The other events are: 09/04 – Donard Commedagh (Northern Ireland - Short) 30/04 Stuc a Chroin (Scotland – Long) & 18/06 – Tebay (England - Medium). The British Inter-Counties will be held at Broughton, Scotland on Saturday 13th May. The British FRA Relays were due to be held in England in 2017 but! A suitable venue could not be located and the Eryri Harriers have volunteered to organise the event at Llanberis on Sunday 15th October, same location as in 2013 but using different courses. 10.BRITISH INTERNATIONAL EVENTS 2017: The Senior Home International will be incorporated into the GB World Championships Trial Race at Sedbergh on Sunday 18th June which unfortunately clashes with the British Championships event at Tebay the previous day. The Snowdon International Race will be held on Saturday 15th July, the first two male/female Welsh finishers at the Tebay British Championships race will be automatically selected subject to the relevant standards being met, (We may review this decision because of the Senior Home International taking place the following day? The original idea was for GB to use the Tebay race as the World Trial event incorporating the Home International but the Tebay event was deemed as not being suitable) the other two male/female athletes will be selected on current form at our committee meeting on Monday 19th June. The senior women’s teams will increase from three to four athletes with three to count. The British & Irish Junior International is provisionally booked for the weekend of 16th/17th September in Scotland at a venue to be confirmed. 11.WELSH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017: (AL) A one off event to be incorporated into the British Championships event at Llanberis (Maesgwm Muddle) on Saturday 12th August. The Welsh Inter-Regional event is proposed to be the Sugar Loaf 7m/1725ft race on Saturday 1st April. (AL) to confirm with the race organiser. It is proposed to stage the Welsh Athletics one off Junior Mountain running championships race sometime in August at a venue to be confirmed. The trial race for the British & Irish Junior International will be incorporated into the event. 12.DEVELOPMENT/TRAINING CAMPS: These have now become more GB elite athlete focussed in the past two years and we plan to go back to the original idea of trying to bring more promising athletes into mountain running with up to 20 athletes invited. Possibly opt for a summer camp in August to coincide with the British & Irish Junior Trial Race? 13.BUDGET: (AL) Nothing to report. 14.A.O.B. (AL) The European and World Championships will now comprise teams of four junior women, four junior male, four senior women and four senior male athletes with three to count. The senior women will compete on the same courses as their male counterparts. 15.Date of Next Meeting: Future Meeting Dates in 2017: Friday 17th March. (PJ) suggested a meeting after the WYC Trial race at Red Kite (Woodlands) on Saturday 29th April & Monday 19th June.
