The Weather Is Warming Up, Spring Sports Are in Full Swing, and the PTSA Continues To

Volume 4, Issue 24 RJR PTSA NEWSLETTER Mar. 28- Apr. 10, 2011 ==DOUBLE ISSUE==**

The weather is warming up, spring sports are in full swing, and the PTSA continues to strive to make a difference in the daily lives of the faculty and students at Reynolds. Thanks for all that you do in that regard!

Were you at the Reynolds Revue this year? Jean Anne and Scott Semke did a wonderful job organizing this night for incoming students and their families. Thanks to all the teachers, parents and students who helped. The student panel discussion is always impressive and leaves us so proud to be a part of the Reynolds family.

The students spoke about how getting involved in the many groups at Reynolds has positively affected their high school experiences. We are grateful for all the parents who have done the very same thing and make such a difference at Reynolds. The Hospitality Committee wows the faculty every month with treats in the workrooms. The College Search Committee has met with all the juniors at one-on- one sessions to help them learn about the college search process and be introduced to the resources in the guidance office.

The Performing Arts Committee continues to support the arts at Reynolds with great effect. Our faculty and student body are incredibly talented. The School Tour Committee has been busy guiding interested families through Reynolds and giving them a personal introduction to this incredible school. The School Store Committee has been selling Reynolds gear and school supplies at lunch all year long. Our volunteer tutors continue to work individually with students who benefit from the attention and feedback from caring adults. The Membership and Volunteer Committees work to ensure that all RJR parents are encouraged to become involved. The Building and Grounds Committee has a work day planned for THIS Saturday afternoon-- please join them if you can and help spruce up the school grounds. Special thanks to the Legacy Campaign Committee, which has done an amazing job of fundraising in an incredibly difficult economic environment. Thanks to Gina and Mark Caudill for all of their hard work and organization! If you have not yet given to this campaign and would like to do so, please send in your donation in any amount, payable to the RJR PTSA (note it is for Legacy Campaign) and drop it off in the main office. Your generosity will help us meet our goal of $100,000 and will enable the PTSA to support the academic, athletic, arts and student services programs at Reynolds more completely.

Great news! The School Improvement Team has approved four PTSA scholarships for seniors graduating in 2011. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who are the first generation of their family to attend college. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who embody the values of Reynolds and have embraced the tradition of excellence at our school. The money for these scholarships comes from the Legacy Campaign funds. Scholarship winners will be chosen by the RJR Scholarship Committee this spring. Priority will be given to students who are PTSA members -- if you have not yet joined, please do so now! Applications are available in the Student Services office and are due May 1st.

If you have not yet gotten involved in the many volunteer opportunities here at Reynolds, please accept this as our personal invitation to do so. Your talents are needed! Contact John and Karen Morris at [email protected] or Jean Anne and Scott Semke at [email protected]. We would love to talk with you and see how you might like to get involved either this or next school year.

Reynolds Gets Nod in Huffington Post Article The following article was published by the Huffington Post. It relates Arts in Academics to what is known as ARTStem. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-m-eger/steam-or-artstem-just- not_b_825431.html

If your son/daughter has signed up and already knows the week(s) they would like to commit to, please send them to see Mrs. Caudill in the magnet office. We also have slots for up to 16 additional interns, so please encourage your student to take advantage of this quality opportunity. Finally, if your student has arranged an art internship independently, please email that information to [email protected] . Congratulations to the Reynolds orchestra for winning a superior rating for its performance at the state orchestra contest. The orchestra also received an excellent rating for its sight-reading.

Come see a showcase of some of RJR's finest dancers, singers and performers! Mark your calendars for the Annual Key Club Follies Talent Show on April 8 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5 and children under twelve can enter for free. The money goes to support the Key Club as well as local and global charities.

March marks the beginning of the Student of the Week program at RJR. The mission of the Student of the Week program is to recognize the achievements of students who often do not get recognized. The point of making good choices should not be to get a reward, just like the point of avoiding a bad choice should not be to avoid punishment. This program is designed to show appreciation for the contributions that students make to the overall success of our school. The types of things that will be recognized are incidents where students go above and beyond the basic requirements for achieving their individual goals at RJR.

Every week, one or two students will be drawn from all candidates. The Friday afternoon announcement will reveal the winner and instruct him or her to pick up the prize package. Prizes include gift cards and coupons to cooperating businesses in the area. We look forward to continually rewarding the extraordinary successes, even those intangible successes, of students at RJR!

There is information and an application at the end of this newsletter for those athletes interested in applying for the scholarship.
